Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hello all -

I mentioned this in the current Halloween thread but I'll put it here too.

My dd (13) is yearning for something scary - so in lieu of the more gruesome Halloween offerings we are planning an Eerie Evening with Edgar Allan Poe - which is quickly turning into a whole rabbit trail adventure!

I borrowed this book from the local library.

And I just ordered the "Edgar Allan Poe Audio Collection" 5 cd set narrated by Vincent Price and Basil Rathbone from here.

I am also considering a movie - we are keeping the evening small - all girls - and they will all be about 13 or older. Any suggestions for a movie or other ideas for our evening? Other study options would be welcomed too!

Thanks!

Our eerie evening with Poe was a success - we haven't finished our literature study on Poe yet but we are working on it. I did find something very interesting - in many collections of Poe there is the story of Morella but what some collections cut out is the hymn that Poe includes within the story. The CD version narrated by Vincent Price did not have it .

But my husband's volume of stories did!

Sancta Maria! turn thine eyes
Upon the sinner's sacrifice
Of fervent prayer and humble love,
From thy holy throne above.
At morn--at noon--at twilight dim--
Maria! thou hast heard my hymn!
In joy and wo--in good and ill--
Mother of God, be with me still!
When my hours flew gently by,
And no storms were int he sky,
My soul, lest it should truant be,
Thy love did guide to thine and thee;
Now, when clouds of Fate o'ercast
All my Present and my Past,
Let my Future radiant shine
With sweet hopes of thee and thine!

It's not completely clear to me whether Poe actually authored the hymn or simply included it in the story. But I think he wrote it. Isn't that interesting?

So glad it went well. It sounds great. Thanks for sharing all the ideas! Very interesting about the Poe hymn.

Donna! Not sure how I missed a literature thread the first time around.......oh, I was really sick that day!

Anyway.........I love your idea! I am glad it went well. Is it possible you could list all of your resources here, and an agenda of your evening? I find it so very clever. In fact, if you can do it quick.......I just might be able to do in time for a visit with Willa and her kids. What fun! They would love it!

The poem is beautiful!

From what I could find, it does seem attributed to Poe, in various collected poems, online. Here is what I found, plus another "Catholic Hymn" by Poe:

"[Hymn]" in Poe's tale "Morella", manuscript, 1833
[Hymn]
by Edgar Allan Poe

Sancta Maria! turn thine eyes
Upon the sinner's sacrifice
Of fervent prayer and humble love,
From thy holy throne above.

At morn, at noon, at twilight dim
Maria! thou hast heard my hymn.
In joy and wo, in good and ill
Mother of God! be with us still.

When my hours flew gently by,
And no storms were in the sky,
My soul, lest it should truant be —
Thy love did guide to thine and thee.

Now, when clouds of Fate o'ercast
All my Present, and my Past,
Let my Future radiant shine
With sweet hopes of thee and thine.

-The End-

[This version of the poem was part of the manuscript of the tale "Morella." The poem, recited as a song by Morella, is addressed to the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus.]

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Catholic Hymn," The Raven and Other Poems, 1845
Catholic Hymn
by Edgar Allan Poe
AT morn — at noon — at twilight dim —
Maria! thou hast heard my hymn!
In joy and wo — in good and ill —
Mother of God, be with me still!
When the Hours flew brightly by
And not a cloud obscured the sky,
My soul, lest it should truant be,
Thy grace did guide to thine and thee;
Now, when storms of Fate o'ercast
Darkly my Present and my Past,
Let my Future radiant shine
With sweet hopes of thee and thine!
-The End-
[This poem was originally part of the tale "Morella," but was removed from later versions. In the copy of The Raven and Other Poems he gave to Sarah H. Whitman, Poe struck out the word "Catholic." The poem is addressed to the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus.]
My oldest loves Poe..........I loved him when I was her age ...........and we tried to visit his home in Philly on our trip..........but we ran out of time
Thanks for the inspiration, Donna!
Donna, I am bumping this up........I would still love to do this, and I am very curious about your resources and PLAN, especially.
Some of the movies our library had look quite scary.
Did you use any movies?
Thanks for your time and inspiration!
Hi Chari -
I'm sorry I dropped the ball on this.
Our evening worked well as an alternative for the Halloween Trick or Treating which dd (13) and her two best friends have outgrown. We kept things very simple and I think that is what made the evening enjoyable.
When dd's friends arrived the first thing they did was make homemade caramel apples for later in evening.
I did decide to just go with "The Edgar Allan Poe Audio Colletion" that I sited above. It is excellent. I preview a version of Murders in the Rue Morguebut it just seemed to be lacking something. I simply ran out of time to go movie hunting - there are other Poe movies out there that might be better.
We darkened the room except for some candles and our quick version of a story table (scroll down the papier amache post). They listened to the "Black Cat" and then had a soup and bread supper.
After supper they took a night walk - we live on dirt road back in the woods so just walking down the road can be a bit spooky LOL (they did have a lantern though).
They came in and had their caramel apples with vanilla ice cream and then listened to "Morella". They played a silly game of pin the nose on the Jack-O-Lantern which I don't think they would have done if younger siblings were around!
By this time the parents and younger siblings arrived so we ended the night with "The Raven". The girls each took home a papier mache pumpkin filled with goodies.
To expand this into a study for dd I found this two excellent websites -
An interactive site featuring the Raven here
And another interactive site that has an amazing time line feature. Lots of great info and features to be found. Look here
There are lots of different study guides to be found online if you want to focus on particular Poe work.
Oh and I highly recommend the unabridged "Edgar Allan Poe" published by Running Press copyright 1983 - my dh has had this from his college days and it is excellent - all Poe's works in chronological order and many with his original notes.
There are so many ways you could approach this Rabbit Trail - you focus on history and look at the time period and his contemporaries. You could tie into a study on the ancients - many of Poe's works refer to Greek myths.     There's a science angle - comparing investigative techniques then and now. You could also look at virtues and vices - I found a good sense of right and wrong in his stories, many showing dire consequences for wrong doing.
I hope this helps a bit.
Donna - I'm so glad you got back to this thread with the info! It's great - I love to see these Rabbit Trails develop and yours is superb!
I also got a chuckle as I have all these ideas and things we've done but they are from past seasons, too. I don't get around to posting them right away. I'm glad you did and it reminds me it is a good thing to post whenever you can.
And I fixed the links for you - it was an easy fix.
Mary - Thank you! Thank you!
I saw that I had doubled the http's but I couldn't get the edit to update and the previews wouldn't come up for me at all.
Now if you would all please overlook the grammar errors I made, I think we're all set .
