What have been some of your children's favorite ways to memorize the states and capitals?
Years and years ago ds used a song, but I can no longer find the cassette nor song book.
This Friday is my hs conference in Phoenix, so I will be shopping

My DS uses the map on the wall... he'll peer at it asking me what this one is and what that one is...
He's pretty good... we were at the mall one day when he saw a sign for a fast food place called 'Bourbon Street Grill' with a picture logo...
'Look Mama... Louisliana' (his pronounciation  )...

We just use wall maps and atlases too, and lots of wooden and regular puzzles.

We have a States & Capitals card game that has one card for each state and one for each capital. You can plan concentration or go-fish. The good ol' map is still a favorite, though.

I like Yakko's World, an Animaniacs tape (or CD?) that I bought years ago. The kids still sing it to remind themselves of the capitals.

We have a very simple map of the U.S. with plastic states. My children played and played with it - matching the sticker states to the map which had an outline of the state and capital on it. In playing, they just learned the capital. We got it from one of those toy party things (like tupperware) which I generally get annoyed with but we bought it at a LLL conference one year.

What we did was to place a US placemat (with capitals listed) on the kitchen table, and every night at dinner, we'd *quiz* each other on the states and capitals. We ALL learned them, and it was a fun way to learn them at dinner!

We've used the Audio Memory cds for years. The States and Capitals cd comes with a map, too. A very good resource that works.
Also, Wee Sing America has a great song for learning all the states in alphabetical order. It's called (appropriately) "The United States". Honestly, *I* use this song to help remember all the states! Very handy.

Quia has been working well for my boys for Latin vocab and math facts-- I'm going to start them on states and capitals using this.

We are playing the license plate game this year. You watch out for all 50 states license plates, and we have map on the computer which we can plug in the various states we have seen. It has been so much fun to once again play a game we did yearly in my family while growing up.
We are keeping the grandparents posted on our progress. Today we found New Mexico!!!

Print a U.S map or make copies with clipboards and that becomes a great car travel game with the kids coloring the states for which they have found license tags or keeping a running tally of how many which can later be put into bar graph form.
We did that one year when doing a lot of car driving.

When we studied the states a couple of years ago we did two things. We studied eache state for a week (in the orderthat that they came into the union) and ordered brochures from the states (like travel planners). Some states even have websites for kids and special pamphlets for research projects. The other thing we did was begin a postcard exchange. We collected all the states (except 4) and a few countries as well. It was a lot of fun and made the children realize how diverse the United States is. We also felt like we had been to these places, which made all those states and capitals seem more real then just a list!

Thank you ladies for the awesome game websites. Audiomemory is a hit here, too, but every so often you have to spice it up with something else.
It's really difficult to study the states in a foreign country! I have no motivation. Sometimes it's not just the children's motivation we have to worry about, but our own, eh? We even skipped the US year of history so that we could work on World History. We'll jump back next year, when we're back in the US.
