Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I recently made some slight modifications to the HTML-based notification e-mails that the forum sends out and would appreciate feedback.

If you like the way the e-mail notifications look, please vote in the poll but do not respond on this thread.

On the other hand, if you have issues with the format of the notification messages, feel free to vote and respond so that I can try to make the forum better for everyone.

Thanks in advance-
Administrator

HTML-based e-mails are encoded to provide a richer appearance. They can display text in varying sizes, colors and fonts; show images IN the message (as opposed to images as attachments); contain hyperlinks; etc. -- an experience similar to viewing a webpage.

The e-mail notifications sent by the forum are encoded (after my recent changes) to look something like this:

Is anyone else seeing only the "Forum" name instead of the "topic" (name of the thread) in the subject of their email?

I used to see "winter" (the first few letters of the topic title).

Now I am only seeing "Picture" (Picture Books)....which doesn't tell me what the specific thread is that the email is regarding.

I see the whole subject line, which has the name of the forum and then the subject. Your email program might have shorter subject lines?

This is what I used to see (up until a couple days ago):

4Real Learning Forum: Tables

Now, I see this:

4Real Learning Forum: Montessori and More: Tables

I see that too, Suzanne. I scroll to the side to read the whole subject.

It's no big deal...I just elongated my "subject" field to accomodate it.   I just wondered if it's part of the change, and FWIW, I liked it better the other way. It just doesn't seem neccessary.

I'm relieved to hear that the subject was not being truncated, Suzanne. Unless I misunderstood your remarks above, it sounds like you had to widen the subject column in your inbox in order to see the whole thing.

Regarding my rationale behind the change...

The moderators and many of our members choose to receive a large number of e-mail notifications in order to keep up with the various forums and threads. As the board has grown in membership, the number of posts and, consequently, the volume of e-mail has grown tremendously. While the mods do their best to keep up, it can be overwhelming at times. By adding the forum name to the subject line, I have enabled these large-volume e-mail notification recipients to sort on the subject field and have messages grouped within their respective forums.

My initial reaction to the idea that the new subject lines might be too long was to shorten it to:

4Real : [forum name] : [topic]

Doing so, however, might force a large number of members to retool inbox rules that are based on "4Real Learning Forum" being in the subject of an incoming message. The floor is certainly open for debate on this.

My primary responsibility here is to ensure that the site remains functional, manageable, and user-friendly for everyone. My goal with this particular poll is to gain feedback on the e-mail notification system and tweak it, if necessary, for the benefit of all.

I hope that my intentions are clear and that my tone does not appear defensive (or, worse, offensive). I truly appreciate your feedback.

Oh that makes sense! Thanks for the explanation.
