The artist study for July will be Edgar Degas. Degas was born July 19, 1834 so we will celebrate his birthday by studying some of his works.
Degas is most famous for his paintings and sculptures of ballerinas. About half of his works are ballet themed so two of the four paintings chosen are ballerinas. I think there will be many little girls enjoying this study! Like a photograph Degas’ paintings freeze motion. Degas mostly painted what went on behind the scenes rather than the big events or performances. Degas enjoyed painting figures in motion so in addition to the ballerinas he also painted many horse race scenes as well as circus/acrobat scenes.

The Dance Class - 1874
There is another painting with the same title that is very similar but was painted the following year using many of the same sketches.
Have your children look at the similarities and look at the differences.

And I wanted to include one of his sculptures also - this is the most famous. It is quite novel in that it includes a real cotton skirt and hair ribbon.

The paintings above are featured in some resources:
"Bellelli Family" – an early life size group portrait displays his life long fascination with human relationships. This painting depicts the tense domestic situation of his Aunt Laure’s family. DK Great Artists book has a nice analysis of this painting on p. 78.
"Dancer on Stage" is featured on p. 27 of Usborne The Children’s Book of Art.
"The Dance Class" has a detailed analysis in Annotated Guides Art, p. 86.
The model for "Little Dancer Aged Fourteen" was Marie van Goethen. The books Elizabeth mentioned (Degas and the Little Dancer and Marie in Fourth Position) are about Marie as the model.

The Musee D'Orsay in Paris was my favorite museum because of its Degas collection. The sculpture above is there. On this pagethere is analysis of two Degas paintings.
