The Solemnity of the Birth of St. John the Baptist was yesterday, June 24. It's a very big feast if it is still celebrated on Sunday. I failed miserably in any specific activities.
But I thought I would ask you to share your celebrations, and bring back some old threads with ideas.
I was at a loss for books to illustrate the story of John the Baptist for my son. The only connected story with the feast is actually a secular book mentioned by Victoria here: Do Re Mi about the book Do Re Mi: If You Can Read Music, Thank Guido d'Arezzo . The hymn for the feast of St. John the Baptist is Ut Queant Laxis, the basis of the Do-Re-Mi scale.
I had posted last year about the chant connection of the hymn for this feast and some other musings, My Apologies to St. John the Baptist.

I have always thought a grasshopper pie would be a fun treat to have but since I have been forbidden to cook on the 24th by my husband (it's my birthday  ) that hasn't happened yet. Although... this recipe calls for refrigeration overnight so he might allow that!
In fact, the back of my daughter's Magnifikid magazine showed a cute cartoon of St. John dreaming about grasshoppers for lunch. We teased them about having grasshopper pie for dessert and they were thoroughly disgusted for a little while.

Very good thread Jenn, I blogged about St John the Baptist and Guido's hand (and mentioned you in there too...) on the feast a couple of days ago (Australian time) And the ONLY reason I know anything on this is because of being a part of a Gregorian Chant Choir. Guido's hand and St John the Baptist's hymn is the first thing we cover in a workshop. I have the chant notation and a recording of it on my blog.
Grasshopper pie  ...well if you were having a plague of them it would be a very 'waste not' approach to getting the numbers down!
I'm going to have a look now, dear Chicken lady, at what you do!

Chicken lady, I cant tell you happy I am to visit your blog and read your lovely celebrations - this discovery has made my day. 
Jenn, that was a great posting, thankyou for the reminder that carob is connected to St John the Baptist - of course I have read it in my herb books before but didn't give it a thought on the feast.
We often buy carob coated treats and one in particular you can buy is carob coated honeycomb! (sort of the Crunchie's healthy alternative ) and I will have to make sure we have that in the house next time.

I sort of missed that Matilda...Happy Birthday on such a beautiful feast!

We always do the bonfire, too. One year we even had a priest come and bless the fire using the old traditional prayers. (He was so excited to find them in his books!) Of course he had to take the obligatory ride in the go-cart through the apple orchard before he could be admitted to the fire. But I think the tradition from the "Old Country" is to have the bonfire on the VIGIL of the nativity, kind of celebrating St. John Nativity Eve, like we celebrate Christmas Eve.

My kids were pretty horrified when I first suggested it, but I can only imagine what they envisioned.  Real grasshoppers? Ewww, Mom!!!

I have seen "locusts" translated as "grasshoppers" when explained to small children. A grasshopper pie would only have a connection by its name since it is not made with grasshoppers. It is a mint pie that is green in color. Not sure why it is called a grasshopper pie, but thought if you stretched it, you could make it fit in with the story. A honey cake would do just as well! Or grasshopper cookies. There is also a cocktail called a "grasshopper".
