Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have been looking for some kind of worksheet or coloring page of the medal of St. Benedict. There are such great symbols and meaning in the inscriptions of the medal and it would be a good project for students on St. Benedict's feast. Having not been able to find anything like that or even a decent sized outline image of the medal, I finally decided to take matters into my own hands. I tried to upload it here, but the size was a bit too big for the server, so I did upload it on my blog. You can download it from there if you are interested.

The Medal of St. Benedict Worksheet

Bump - this worksheet is fabulous!
We use it every year.

I agree with that "fabulous" comment! Happy feast, everyone!

Oh, and does anyone have a resource for answering the questions on the worksheet, or are you just going to do your homework before giving it to the kids?

There is this site that explains it...

Oh, another famous monastery founded by St. Benedict is Monte Cassino. A whole unit study could be done on the monasteries Benedict founded, or even this one alone. There was even a Battle of Monte Cassino in WWII where it was bombed to ruins, hundreds of innocent lives lost.

From Catholic Encyclopedia. Also the Benedictine's website gives some information and links about this monastery.

For some reason I keep thinking that there is a picture book about this monastery and WWII. Am I mistaken?

Thanks everyone for the compliment. I'm so glad it is a helpful resource for this feast. It is such a wonderful medal to know the symbolism of.

That is the site I was going to suggest - that is what we used.

We have been out all day. This morning we did a field trip I've been hoping to do for years. We visited a cave in the spirit of St. Benedict's years spent in the cave at Subiaco for his hermitage - Sacred Cave (Sacro Speco).

Here we are in our small cave - only one I could find fairly close locally.

Bumping...I love this feast day...and since I have a daughter heading to Benedictine College in next month it takes on new significance in our family.
