I agree, when your baby starts to eat solids you need to continually re-assess what your daily points range should be. If you find you are not losing weight, just subtract a couple of points and see if your next weigh-in is more to your liking....always making sure your milk supply is adequate, of course. I am short and small-framed and I don't need all those nursing points, especially now that my baby is 15 months.

I have used WW since 2000 after baby#5. I had 3 more babies after that and always got back down to goal weight with WW in between. I start counting points in the hospital! It is a very healthy diet for a nursing mother as it encourages water, fruit and fiber so much.

Here is a little tip for those like me who really like baking and actually eating the results! I have been using a book called Secrets of Fat-Free Baking by Sandra Woodruff this winter. It is 232 pages of low-points desserts which are tasty and a cinch to make! It is not endorsed by WW officially or anything but the points values can be calculated with the nutritional info given with each recipe (most are 1 or 2 points). I have been eating brownies, muffins, biscotti, quick breads or scones every day (always counting my points) and I lost 6 pounds in the last 6 weeks or so...these baked goods do not have a candy-like quality because they are lower in sugar (sweetened by fruit, maple syrup, honey, or small amounts of sugar, NO artificial sweeteners) but I found this easy to get used to and now I actually prefer the taste. She uses many different whole grain flours and each recipe packs a nutritional punch. Better for the kids, too! She really shows you how to have your cake and eat it, too!

Well, this week wasn't so great. An exercise in frustration is more like it.

I guess it will take a little adjusting to figure out where exactly I need to be. When I did the points last time there were no "flex" points. You could choose to save a few points each day if you wanted but you were encouraged to use most of your points. With the "flex" I am not using them so much and I think it is messing with my metabolism.

I almost gave up when I got on the scale on Monday. All week the scale was frustrating me.    I am hoping this week will be better but we will see.

I hope everyone else had a better week.

Blessings,
Krisann

Krisann,
I think your body went into starvation mode. EAT all your points, including your flex points. A very simimlar thing happened to my good friend when we were doing WW together last year. As soon as she began eating all her points, she began losing steadliy. You are doing great! I'll be joining you soon!

At the risk of having tomatoes thrown at me, I'm going to offer my "yes, buts" to WW:
The first is to nod at Books' point above. I've seen it used to eat junk--lots of sugar replacers, fat replacers, etc. It doesn't teach solid nutrition of real food. But, you can learn that elsewhere and apply it to the points system.

I think the exercise points are weird. Never seemed quite accurate to me.

In practice, I've seen lots of people do very well to lose weight and few people keep it off.

Finally, I worry that the points system--the whole idea of calculating everything you put in your mouth--is unhealthy emotionally. Food isn't supposed to be that way is it? Should we really weigh and measure and calculate food like that?
It seems like with WW we might be in danger of modeling an unnatural (unbiblical? Matthew 6:31-32) preoccupation with food and weight for our children.

On the other hand, we certainly don't want to model gluttony or unhealthy obesity. I'm not arguing. I'm just asking. And I'm asking as someone who has struggled with these
ideas for a long time.

I saw this thread when it started, but hesitated....I certainly NEVER want to criticise efforts to lose weight. But, since Elizabeth posted....maybe i have more courage for the tomatoes

I have always struggled with LOVING food and loving to eat. As a very athletic teenager and single gal....weight gain didn't happen. I exercised A LOT, and ate A LOT! In hindsight, food and exercise was much too important to me. I never had an eating disorder per se, but exercise and food ruled my days. I did not have “peace with food.”

When I became a mom to three under age 3, I obviously was not as active and my love for food took it’s toll. One year after my 3rd baby (in 2.5 years) I was 30 pounds heavier than before my first child. Not a big deal, I guess…..but I realized that food was WAY too important to me personally and I ate way too much, thought about it, etc.

Long story short…..I have gone through the The Light Weigh
program twice now, and am about 7 pounds less than when I got married. I know that doing the Lightweigh is not possible for everyone……it’s hard to find a group and it’s a big commitment (12 sessions). But, the concepts that Suzanne Fowler “teaches” are very spiritual, very Catholic….and I feel, one of the only ways to have a true “peace with food” instead of being obsessed with it…..counting calories, points, eating a certain type of food, etc. Food is not meant to be that. It is simply something to be enjoyed that sustains you. “Naturally thin eaters” have adapted the Lightweigh concepts somehow naturally….the rest of us have to work at it.

I read Elizabeth’s post a few months ago, and literally JUMPED in the air. This is the sort of peace with food that we all need. Not a “diet mentally”. I know the WW concepts are good….it’s basically portion-control. Although I don’t agree with some foods having more or less points. But the way they go about it…..counting points, analyzing food intake, etc. is not quite right. We are filling our time/energy/thoughts STIlL with food instead of with Jesus.

My girlfriend is doing the Lightweigh, has lost 50 pounds in about 4 months which is A LOT! She originally started the LightWeigh about 1 year ago and has been through it 3 times. It’s taken three times for her to start having a “peace with food.” (sorry to be using that phrase so much.) She has another 40-50 pounds to go and is really hitting some walls right now. But, through prayer and sacrifice…..she’ll do it. It’s truly a spiritual battle.

Anyway….sorry to go on and on, but if anyone wants to talk about the Lightweigh….I’m available.

In general the concepts of the Lightweigh are so simple, yet so difficult…..

Wait until you are actually HUNGRY to eat.

Eat only a portion when you do (one portion = one mug of food)

It doesn’t matter you eat….it’s simply the AMOUNT that you eat. Naturally, it’s better to eat healthy food….and your body will crave healthy foods as you progress. But, eat what your body desires so you aren't craving SOMETHING ELSE.

When you are tempted, make sacrifices for people. (I’m foregoing this cookie, and offering it up for my neighbor who has cancer.) Sprirituality of St. Therese

Focus on overcoming one “fault” per week….and doing the Ignatius review nightly.

Every session consists of:
Prayer, Bible Study, Video (each about an hour long).
You get a spiritual kit, Ignatian Review Notebook, Audio tapes to listen to outside of the session.

There is a brief description of the program here.

...Ok...here it goes....I'm actually pushing the "post reply" button.....

I don't think we should be thinking about food all day....but I definitely think we should measure it if our habits are not in line. Measuring can teach you what a healthy portion is. Once you have the habit, throw the measuring cups away! But Eve ate the apple....and now we generally need a crutch or a help or a measuring cup in our battles for holiness.

Is there anyway to lead a Light Weigh program with a group on line? Can you just learn it from a leader without buying the whole program?

Yes! What Elizabeth said!

This is what I was walking around the edges of when I posted on the previous page. And, with Suzanne, I would not ever criticize someone wanting to lose weight to be healthier. Still, I found WW discouraging because so many of the people there weren't discussing or encouraging healthier eating or a more appropriate relationship with food. They seemed to focus on how to play tricks to *get away with* eating junk in the form of low-cal chemicals masquerading as food. Sorry if that sounds harsh. It's just that after going for week after week, I was getting really tired of hearing about that sort of thing when I really needed encouragement to eat more healthily. That's where the fatigue I mentioned in the previous post came in.

I plan to check out the Light Weigh site. From what has been posted here, it sounds like it might be better suited to my needs. Thanks, Suzanne, for the link. I'll probably post after I've looked at it (and maybe even tried it). I am getting very discouraged with my weight!

Peace,
Nancy

Fwiw, I think that any time we attempt any kind of weight loss program, it needs to be with a God-focused mindset. The Light Weigh is a great program, but its also difficult for hs mommies with lots of littles. I have seen Weight Watchers work (and its bonus is being able to do it without meetings), but I have also seen lots of people use it (abuse it?) with junky food, as Elizabeth said. Not the point, imho. For me, it was a good choice because I needed a reminder of what a healthy portion is, and I needed to retrain my brain and body to healthy portions so that it became automatic. I had lost sight of this after "eating for two" for so long. I already knew a lot about healthy eating, so I focused on lots of fruits, vegetables and lowfat proteins and whole grains in moderation (I am not working with allergy problems).

I believe that God led me to this program precisely because of the portion control problem I had. Everything else I was reading/trying was alternative health minded. They all said that if I just ate healthy (according to their definitions), the weight would come off. But it doesn't work well when you are out of practice with how much is enough, or too much. I undertook weight loss with the mindset that overeating is an issue for the confessional, and thanks to WW, now I know when I am guilty of it!

So anyway, before you assume its a points issue, I'd say to check your diet and make sure its balanced and full of good foods, and then remember that eating too little is no better for you than eating too much. Temperance is the goal.

Replying to my own question.

It looks like there is no way to do the program other than the way it is designed. Probably too many copyright issues. But is does look like a good balance for learning to deal with food in a healthy way.

I also visited the Light Weigh site and agree that it seems like a good balance. There are certainly some tools and skills from WW that are of great value in helping control eating habits, but weight loss is about so much more than just eating habits. The spiritual side of Light Weigh would probably work better for me because including the spiritual dimension would provide a motivation that makes more sense to me and addresses the root of the changes I need to make.

(Sorry if my posts seem like I'm whining about WW; I'm mulling over just why it *didn't do it for me*).

Peace,
Nancy

Bridget and Nancy,

I did the Light Weigh a couple of years ago. Each meeting (12 weeks worth) was set up the same. They included viewing a video, discussing the scripture for the week, prayer, and sharing.
The video included presentation of a saint, an example of a mug-sized portion of food (pizza, doughnuts, take-out, etc.,) a "faith fact" which was sort of a little apologetic fact of the Church, and some inspirational messages. I can't recall what else was in it.

Our group did the light weigh twice, and then we decided to do a variation on it. We took turns presenting a saint to each other each week, found some beautiful prayers to share, and for scripture study, we watched Jeff Cavin's Great Bible Adventure. We still discussed the mug-sized portions, and whatever made a week easy or hard.

LW also has one journal each day and do an Ignatian review. (Just love St. Ignatius!)

All in all, we all found, no matter how "faithful" or close to God we felt before LW, that we all grew significantly in faith , while we didn't always achieve the weight loss we had prayed for.

Just thought I would throw all that in, just in case you were thinking of doing something together, online!

God Bless,
Stacy in MI

My inclination would be to have someone contact Light Weigh and see if they'd be willing to adapt the program for us. If not, maybe we can put our heads together and "design" something of our own.

I talked to one of the staffers this afternoon just double checking about the on-line-thing that Bridget asked about. The answer is no....because there is just so much value in "committing" to a group and attending the meetings and praying and sacrificing for each other. It's really a huge part of the program. But, I'm wondering if Suzanne saw the forum, how it operates, how the prayer and sacrificial aspects actually happen here.

But then how would everyone watch the videos? Technical stuff that I don't understand, perhaps? Maybe it would be possible. It's worth a call. I'll try to call tomorrow morning. They're in Kansas, Central time.

Thanks for checking, Suzanne. I was going to try when I got everyone settled here.

The videos would have to put into some kind of viewing format. Are they still videos or DVD?

I have VHS, but they are from years ago. I'm pretty sure they are sending out DVDs to the coordinators now.

Well gee, I started this thread to find others who were already using the program so that we could encourage each other.

I don't think about food all day, it doesn't take my mind off Jesus, etc. WW is a way to get back to a healthy weight and I am not just "dieting" I am trying to change the way I eat and including regular exercise.

In fact, part of the reason I am so overweight is because I don't think about what I eat often enough. I don't eat enough food so my metabolism shuts down and my body goes into starvation mode. Food and eating are some things I DO need to focus on, at least for a while until I get back in the habit of eating the right amount of food.

I need something to help remind me not only about portion control but also to look at the nutritional value of what I am eating and what I am cooking for my family. Before WW I would just make whatever sounded good or recipes from wherever not thinking about the amount of fat content or whether there was any fiber in it. Now I look at the fat content, the calories, etc. and determine if it is something we should be eating.

At Wal-Mart they have recipes in the meat section. I picked up a few earlier this week and started looking at them. There were a few that sounded delicious and were not too high in calories or fat per serving but most of them were insanely high. One for ribs was over 1300 calories and more than 30 grams of fat PER SERVING! Before WW I would have made it and ate it without even thinking about it, now there is no way I would make something like that for my family.

I don't use the points so I can eat as much junk as I can fit into my allowance and anyone that does that isn't really trying to lose weight and get healthy. WW does not encourage anything like that. There are tons of healthy recipes, advice columns, and much more available to subscribers. WW wants people to succeed.

If there is another program that works for you, that is great. I hope we can all get healthy. But please don't put down a program that is working for others and has worked for me personally in the past and hopefully in the future. The program is not inherently bad but like anthing in life it can be misused or abused.

There once was a man drowning in the ocean. A boat came by and tried to rescue him.

He said, "No thanks, God will save me." So they left.

A short time later, another boat came by and threw him a lifeline.

The man said, "No thank you, God will save me." They left and the man drowned.

In heaven the man said to God, "I trusted you, why didn't you save me?"

God said, "I sent two boats to rescue you, you turned them both down!"
WW is my God sent "rescue" from unhealthy eating habits and I choose to accept it.

Blessings,
Krisann

Go, Krisann! You seem to be using the program the way it was intended to be used. It can really teach you how to eat well and temperately, which should be the goal in any weight control program. Congratulations and kudos to you on your new healthy lifestyle!

I'm sorry Krisann. You're right; you didn't ask for opinions about WW. You asked for people to encourage you. We should take the "alternative to WW" discussion to another thread. Suzanne, when you get some info, would you please start another thread for those who are interested in pursuing something else?

And the people who are success stories with WW, please cheer Krisann!

You're right, Krisann...totally hijacked.    I apologize.

I certainly didn't mean to, but sometimes it just happens just like in a real life convo ...you just start talking about something else. I'm TOTALLY supportive of WW and everyone's weight loss!

If I find out anything further about LightWeigh, I'll start another thread.

Carry on.......
