What are the deciding factors for you when determining when to take a child to the pediatrician?

I rarely do these days, but we have been very blessed with good health.

I ask today because my 11 month old has lots of yellow mucous, from nose and eyes, a juicy cough and a fever. In the past, I would have been there first thing in the morning, now I am a little slower to make that call.

Just wondering.

Ironically, I am an RN who used to work in a ped's office and also as an advice nurse. You would think I would have this straight in my head.

I think you need to take the child in. It sounds like there are some bacterial infection concerns, like the eye discharge together with the fever. I would look at the constellation of symptoms, not just knee-jerk take them in for a fever. But this sounds like a fair amount going on that would warrant an office visit.

Breast milk in the eyes and nose may be quite helpful. Do you use homeopathics?
