Honeycrisp is in the stores....it's a "hybrid" (is that the term?) and fairly new, I believe.

Maryan here in our neck of the woods we have only been able to find Honeycrisp & Staymans at orchards and farmer markets. Pink Ladies you might be able to find in the stores...definitely around now would be better. The best thing about this time of year, is not just all the varieties available, but that the cost is so low! Woohoo!
A friend of ours goes to her local orchard on the last day of the orchard's season. She takes several big plastic garbage cans, lines them with trashbags...she drives and the kids hang out of the doors and windows (I know, sounds a wee bit dangerous!) as they slowly drive by and park under/next to trees and pick the last apples. That day the orchard has them at a super discount. Then they keep the trashcans outdoors (the last day of the season is usually when the weather is at a consistently cool temp) through the winter...she says they have apples for months!

My local grocery store has the Honey Crisp, Maryan. Next time you're in town.

Thanks you guys -- I'll have to plan an orchard trip AND a shopping trip in town!
...and would you use honey crisp for baking or just for eating?
Not that dh has EVER complained about my Mac apple pie, but I'm just wondering if I should branch out? I'm with Maria B. -- I have no idea what is best for baking!! I just know when I shared that I bake with Macs several bakers balked at the idea. (So I'm glad some of you guys share my love for baking with Macs), but I can't remember what the "bakers" recommended either!! I just remember the teasing part.

We eat lots of different apples around here, everyone has their own favorite.
Ronan loves Honeycrisp, as soon as we heard they were in the stores we hit Wegman's to stock up. I have also seen them in Giant 'round here. When the honeycrips are gone Ronan prefers the Pink Ladies (he might just like the name ).
Carter likes Golden Delicious. We use those a lot for applesauce, really yummy and no sugar needed.
MacKenzie likes Granny Smith's, she likes to eat them with Peanut Butter.
We pretty much like all apples. Although, I admit I never buy Red Delicious, I think I ate to many of them when I was a kid.

We LOVE all apples here -- except "delicious" as they're too chancy for pulpy-ness !
I always have a dozen or so apples ready for "mom, I'm starving" times.....and baking and drying ... they're all great.
If I HAD to choose, it'd be granny smiths (or the old winesap which are almost impossible to find )

Maryan, what a neat question! I LOVE Macs the best. They are what I grew up on, and just what apples should taste like for me. Applesauce (pink because we leave the peels on) and apple pie - YUM!!
I am very intrigued by Honeycrisps though, ever since Jennifer posted about them. My farm has them and I think I will pick up a bag on Saturday. They looked nice and big and would make nice caramel apples I bet. Ooh, just remembered though, oldest ds now has braces and can't "do" caramel apples ... maybe baked apples one chilly morning?

Dawn it must be the northeastern thing!!
And honestly, ladies... my mouth is watering with all the apple suggestions!! I feel like having an apple themed party!! Apple tasting (with all these new apples that I've never heard of), apple desserts of all kinds (including the pies and the caramels), cider, bobbing...

I'm surprised to hear they are growing Honey Crisps in our neck of the woods. For some reason I thought they were an upstate New York invention. They are only available for a few weeks in the the fall. We pick them up whenever we see them. It was from Jennifer's blog that I found out it is Honey Crisp time and we went right to the store.
We just eat Honey Crisps, we don't bake with them. To me they taste just like fresh apple cider. I introduced my dad to them when he was here earlier this month, I'm not sure if they have made it as far west at California, he had never had one before.

We love Honey Crisp. Actually, I love just about any variety of apple except Red Delicious because I have yet to have that wasn't like mush. I like making a pie with 2-3 different kinds of apple. And though I don't eat them raw, I love Golden Delicious for applesauce and pies. The orchard we always pick at has winesaps, jonagold, stayman mmmmm.
Maryan, Romes are great for baking. You have that party, I'll be there .

The favorites in our house are Jonathan, Stayman, and MacIntosh. I don't recall ever seeing them in grocery stores, but I prefer to *buy local* and these are readily available from nearby orchards.
Peace,
Nancy

Our favorite for eating is Honeycrisp, (which we can pick off the tree in an orchard down the road).
For cooking I like Ira Reds, they are tart and last in the NY outdoors for a very long time.

Hm, Cortlands, no Empire, no Cameo....Pink Lady...Jonagold....I think it just depends on the mood I'm in!
For baking, I like to use a mix of Granny Smith and 20 ounce. For baked apples just the Grannies.

Well, I can't find my favorite apple anymore As a kid growing up in MI I LOVED snow apples. They were red on the outside and snow white on the inside. I have never seen them in PA and even when I have been back in MI in the fall I wasn't able to find them at a local orchard. They were SOOOOO delicious.
