Oh, thanks for the tip, Maggie! I see it's printed by Zonderkidz. Did you find any underlying Protestant messages?
I just ordered "The Bird's Gift" by Eric Kimmel, and we have "Rechenka's Eggs" and the "Egg Tree" for our egg tradition books. I'll be so happy to add another Ukrainian egg book that incorporates the Christian symbolism!

I didnt notice any problems...but i dont always catch them. Somtimes they are so subtle but I think its ok.
in the other books its just little things like "pastor" instead of "Father"
ive never heard of the "egg tree" ill go look that one up.

The Egg Tree by Katherine Milhous is a Caldecott award book. It's based on the Pennsyvlania Dutch scratch designs. And it's not religious...there's an easter hare delivering the eggs. But if you want a great book with wonderful egg designs and emphasis on the beautiful craft and custom, this is great.

From Jenn's recommendations on pysanky eggs, I went ahead and ordered This Was The Day -- about a mom and daughter getting ready for Easter day. I'll post once I get it and read it ...

I recently picked up Rechenka's Eggs at our library's spring sale.
I'm always delighted to get a good book for such a low price, but I'm always sad to see the library selling off great books ....

I just received The Bird's Gift by Eric Kimmel. In the pysanky circles this book is praised highly.
Even with my hoarse voice (I have laryngitis) my son enjoyed the book. It's a story of one of the earliest coldest winters in the Ukraine, and many golden birds were stranded, about to die in the snow. The villages, including the priest, rescue all the birds, and they stay most of the winter. They leave, but then return at Easter, leaving eggs, all unique and beautiful, as a gift. That is one of the stories of the origin of pysanky.
There isn't mention of the resurrection, but it's still a very beautiful book. And it continues the theme of birds started by Song of Swallows.

The Bird's Gift and Easter Eggs for Anya are both WINNERS over here! They are both beautiful, sweet books. Wonderful illustrations and heart-warming. Easter Eggs for Anya reminded me of Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree . I love books that have the daddy-soldiers coming home from war.
Thanks for the recommendation Maggie and Jenn.

I picked this book up from our local Catholic bookstore and loved it. We also got some great ideas for egg designs from the end of the book. I even tried the birds and wheat one!
