I tried a quick search in the archives and couldn't find anything (but I'm really bad at searches, so I wouldn't be surprised if I missed something). I'm looking for ideas for next week. I have a lot of Thanksgiving books to read, but I don't have any ideas for projects. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas to share. A lapbook would be great. And I love Karen E's
Thanksgiving tree. Any suggestions?

I don't think there has been a substantial Thanksgiving brainstorming thread so thanks for starting it.

Last year a Blessings box was one idea recommended.

And there were corn-themed ideas.

Lapbook sample template which would be a help for lapbook ideas.

We have done these great paper dolls for Thanksgiving.

Last year (we probably got the idea here) we made a giant turkey out of construction paper. Then we traced each family member's hand on different colored (but autumn themed) paper. On each finger we wrote the things we were thankful for. The cut-out hands became the turkey's tail. We put it on the wall. I can't remember if we took a picture though.

Katherine --I'm glad you liked the tree! Thank you.

Another quick, fun little hands-on project we did a couple years ago with friends was to decorate pumpkins to look like turkeys. The pumpkin is the body, and a construction paper head and feathers are glued on. They're really cute -- I'll have to see if I can post a picture of them.

Katherine: I scanned the picture of our pumpkin turkeys, and also found some really cute ideas after Googling.

If you see this, I was wondering where the Thanksgiving poem comes from in your dd's lapbook. Who is the author? I would like to incorporate this into our school next week.

Elizabeth mentioned Enchanted Learning in her post on Thanksgiving lapbooks, so I searched around their site and found some very cute crafts to add to this thread.

There is a hand and footThanksgiving turkey. The body of the turkey is a tracing of the child's foot and the feathers are the child's hand (very similar to Stef's description above). There are quite a few more ideas on the site.

I also found an interactive Thanksgiving resource online from Scholastic called The First Thanksgiving. I haven't gone through all of the media yet, but so far it looks really good.

I think I'm set for next week!

i found the poem at Ambleside. That was Mary Beth's lapbook. Patrick memorized this poem., since he is the one to complain because my sister-in-law always sits him at the "kids' table." (We don't do kids' tables at my house and my children have been known to grumble about it at the cousins.

That does look good. Another fun interactive is the one from the actual Plimoth Plantation website. My kids enjoyed it.

This is very ignorant of me, but what is the purpose of a lapbook? Is it a scrapbook type of memento, only geared toward a specific subject or theme?

It's definitely not ignorant of you!

We just put together our first lapbook last week and obviously are new to the idea. This board has been helpful in getting ideas for them (especially Elizabeth who continues to put wonderful lapbooks ideas on her blog).

I am sure that someone more experienced in lapbooking could answer this question better, but I would say that the purpose is to collect/present/record the learning a child has done on a particular topic. We are doing a Thanksgiving lapbook this week and will begin one on St. Nicholas next week. So far I have plans to make joint lapbooks (all the kids contribute to one large lapbook) since we're studying these topics as a family.

It's a lot of fun and we are really loving it.

So far, I've found great resources on lapbooking from

Tobin's Lab. And I found a great example of an Old Testament lapbook here..

Now I'll wait for you more experienced ladies to give a better answer.

It really backfired, though. He did pitch a fit on being assigned to the kids' table. apparently, he figured if he recited the poem, it would be a pass to the grownup table.. It was a very awkward sociail moment

We are going to do a Thanksgiving lapbook these next 2 days (we will be traveling to FL for Thanksgiving and so only have 2 days of school) but I dont know what will be in it yet. We are going to have to wing it I guess (what else is new, right?)!!
