My son has told me his favorite subject on earth is airplanes--yes, a few days AFTER we were just in the states buying all the books to bring back! I've ordered some books that will come with a guest sometime in October or maybe Christmas, and he'll just have to hold tight, but as long as I was ordering, I wondered if anyone knew of any can't miss books? I believe he was originally inspired by reading "Falcons of France", which he has read 3x. He is especially interested in WARTIME aviation.
What we have is:
Great Fighters: A Complete Encyclopedia of every Warplane made
Aviation, the first 100 years
Fighting the Flying Circus, by Eddie Rickenbacker
A couple of Landmark books (Battle of Britain and Great American Pilots of WW2)
Planes, Gliders, how they work--Kingfisher
Well--that could be plenty--I just wondered if anyone, or anyone's son, for example, knew of any absolutely can't miss books, especially if they are narrative . . .
Thanks for checking!

Seymour Simon has a fabulous book on paper airplanes. It explains step-by-step how and why a plane flies while using paper airplanes as experimental models. It is really great for building an understanding of the fundamentals of aerodynamics.

Something about boys and war books.....My sons at that age really enjoyed Frank Bonham's Ghost Front (Battle of the Bulge -some air battles, some land) and Stephen Meader's Sabre Pilot.
This look intriguing though I haven't seen them myself - R.A.F. series
A picture book for the younger set (though olders enjoy it even if they won't admit it!) is Peter Spier's Bored, Nothing to do. It is a very funny book.

This sounds like just the kind of thing I'm looking for--thanks, I'll check these out!
The R.A.F. series link did not work for me--?

The Wright Brothers by Quentin Reynolds was one of our favourites for aviation.

We're visiting Wright Patterson Museum today and found this list of suggested readings - opens to a pdf file.
And there's PROJECT SOAR: A Curriculum Guide for Kindergarten through 8th Grade
(SOAR: Science in Ohio through Aerospace Resources) -- wow, lots of neat stuff here!
