I'm going on my own little rabbit trail this year. I'm going to watch at least one Western movie with my husband every month, and try to find a couple western books/novels that I like. I also have this crazy cookbook Fifty From the Trail that my mother gave to dh a couple years ago that has lots of "trail recipes" that look quite good.
DH is a big Western-Movie-Buff, and I....am....well,....NOT! I figured since we have a room in our house called "The Cowboy Room", I should get my act together!
The melted cheese thread, and specifically the Pioneer Woman's Favorite Sandwich got me thinking about this. Who knew a cheese-thread could be so inspiring!
For some reason, this time period, genre, etc. never appealed to me, but DH is a big Fan of Ol' Westerns. Thought maybe if I treat it like a rabbit trail and really embrace it there is a better chance I'll have some fun with this!
Here is the list of possible books I'm going to TRY:
**The Virginian
**The Shootist
**Shane
**True Grit
**Riders of the Purple Sage
**DH's pick of Louis L'amour
**Monte Walsh
I read All The Pretty Horses and Lonesome Dove a long time ago.
Here is the list of movies:
True Grit
Silverado
Magnificant Seven
The Shootist
The Big Country
Duel in the Sun
How the West was Won
El Dorado
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
Once Upon a time in the west
Tombstone
The Alamo
Big Jake
Shenandoah
Hang 'em High
Quick and the Dead
Man Who Shot Liberty Valence
Outlaw Josey Wales
Pale Rider
**I left out some of the more modern movies that we've already seen.....I'll try to list those later. I'm focusing on the OLD movies, that my library has.
I also want to read or watch something about John Wayne, but I haven't gotten that far yet. Any suggestions?
Any favorites in your family?
Have you or dc read any of these books?
Seen any of the movies?
Others to recommend?

Well, you can watch Roy Rogers and Lone Ranger movies with the children, over and over and over...

I like Westerns even though it has been a while since I have watched any.
From your list I have seen:
The Magnificent Seven
The Big Country
Duel in the Sun
and I liked them all. Others I have seen:
Stagecoach
Mclintock
and in my younger years I used to like the Westerns with
Clint Eastwood in them. I haven't seen them since then so I don't know what I would think now.
I read the All The Pretty Horses and I think that is the only Western book I have ever read.

I have not read too many westerns (except for my grandfather's huge collection of Zane Grey books!), but if you're looking for some western film history books, the Beverly and Jim Rogers Museum of Lone Pine Film History has a great collection of books about westerns, cowboy poetry, western film actors, etc. (Disclaimer: One of my friends is married to the museum director!) You can click on "gift shop" to find the books.
It's a great museum - "Iron Man" was filmed in Lone Pine, too, so they have memorabilia from that film, "Tremors," Star Trek films, etc., not just westerns! If you're ever driving down California Highway 395, be sure to stop in.

The Lonesome Gods by Louis L'amour is a fantastic book! I consider it one of my favorites.
As for movies, the kids like Chism with John Wayne.

I like many of the movies on that list. I am a lukewarm "Western" fan, but an avid old movie fan. One to add to your list is Winchester 73.
What a nice thing you are doing for your husband! He will appreciate the interest in his hobby, I am sure.
Enjoy!
