Suzanne - which crayons did you buy - I just cannot decide between Stone, Stockmar and Lyra?

On the Quality vs. Quantity thread there is what the Paper, Scissors, Stone people told me. We received our order the other day and here is our feedback:

Crayons

I ordered the 6-pack set of Lyras, 2 individual Stone, and 2 individual Stockmar.

Lycra – I ordered the 6-PACK of these b/c they are triangle shaped, and we need help with holding correctly. They are also the biggest crayon….longer and thicker. So you pay more $$ for them but really get more crayon.   They are beautiful, bright colors. Love em’!

Stockmars – go on like the Lycras, but the colors are not as bright and bold as the Lyras. Not how they are applied, but just the actual color tone. Round shape, a bit thinner and shorter than the Lyras. PPS sells the most Stockmars.

Stone - We actually like the colors of the Stones the best. Smoother, less “white” shows through, very pretty.   They look more like an oil pastel. They are round, same thickness as the Stockmars. Shorter than the Lyra, taller than the stockmar. These also have no petroleum in them (all natural) which the attraction for some.

We like the color and application of the Stone, but the girls like to hold and handle the Lyras, b/c of the large triangular barrel.

I also got a Block set of Lyras. Surprisingly, they like these. I thought maybe this would be silly $$$ spent. PPS people said the difference here was the tone in the color (difference b/t stockmar blocks and lyra blocks). Also, I liked the colors that come with the Lyras better than the Stockmar, in the block crayons.

Pencils

Colored pencils.....Set of 6 Super Ferbys and 2 Lyra Super 3. (Super 3 are Triangle shaped, but a bit smaller than the Ferbys). We like the Super Ferbys. The lead is HUGE on them....they'll last longer and less sharpening. The color is beautiful. The littles like to hold the bigger ones. And, my dd-6 who doesn't hold her pencil right is now holding her pencil correctly, so the large, triangular barrel helps. These are the ones that Montessori classrooms use. I will definitely be buying more of these as $$$ permits.

There is also the Color Giants.....which are the same size as the Super Ferby, but Hexagonal in shape. I don't have these, as I wanted the triangle shape.

I ordered a package of the Lyra modeling clay off ebay. Big hit so far…..but it’s still “new”.

HTH,

I spoke with PSS yesterday and I'm hoping I'll have some samples for the conference. At the very least, there will be stacks of catalogs there.

Their catalogues are great, BTW. They have actual sizes of the pencils and crayons, which is helpful.

Can anyone compare the quality of Prismacolor colored pencils vs. the Ferbys? I was just getting on the prismacolor bandwagon, and now I'm all confused.

Are the Ferbys more for younger kids?

Amy~
I was just thinking of clarifying this.

I went on a search for colored pencils because:

1. MY set of Prismacolors are great and we all love them. But, for smaller kids (mine are 6, 5, 3.5, 1) they broke pretty easily and wore down more, thus making me sharpen them more often. The lead is also softer, so tracing isn't a good thing for them to do with them. Plus they aren't cheap.

2. We have always had tons of regular Crayola colored pencils that we inherited from someone and the girls hardly ever used them. Partly because you have to press so hard to get any decent color out of them and partly b/c the leads were always broken and I just couldn't keep up with the sharpening.

3. I wanted to try the triangular barrell for dd-6 who doesn't hold the pencil correctly.

So, for the SMALLER children, you need a solid, long-lasting pencil that has great color. And, in my case, I wanted triangular.

PSS people said that some older kids like the larger pencils. But, mainly they are for younger kids.

Once they are older, any of the good colored pencils are great.....Prismacolors, Derwent, Ferby (smaller ones) etc.

I just compared the Prismas and the Ferbys.....both beautiful colors and smooth application! Quite similar. But I'm no artist.....so what do I know?

Good question Amy - and thanks for replying Suzanne - I had similar questions. I am still looking for color pencils for 8 and 10 year olds. I am not a big Prismacolor fan. I was thinking of Faber Castells or Derwent - recommended by the kids former art teacher - have not used either.

I have not done my order yet - nursing baby in a growth phase and very needy 3 year old!

Marilyn -
Is there any reason why you would want a triangular barrell?

If yes, the Lyra Super 3 are between a reg-size-pencil and a super-ferby.

The next step up for a 10-yr-old would be the Lyra Rembrandt Polycolor or Aquacolor (water soluable). Regular sized pencils.

My sister just purchased a set of Derwent Studio colored pencils off ebay for $9 (set of 12) including shipping.

I have a set of Prang colored pencils.... I wonder where they fall on the spectrum. They seem better than the Crayola ones we have, but I can't say that we have used them all that much yet.

I have been tagging and putting items away for a big consignment sale coming up here soon, and I keep thinking: oh, I'll sell this. I'll turn it into two more colored pencils, LOL

I wondered about Prang too. These are the pencils that Rainbow Resource recommends and sells.
These are the thicker ones.
There seem to be two other levels....."Professional" and "Fun."

I had the great good fortune Saturday to come across a set of six Lyra pencils and a sharpener at a garage sale. And since it was starting to rain, the lady in charge said just give her a dollar for my stack of two books, four puzzles and the pencil set.

The pencils- wow. The color is really amazing. Much more vivd than my Prang set.

WOW! You got a GREAT deal! The Lyra are amazing ... wish I'd bought a TON when we were overseas!

I'm thinking of getting my granddaughter the Lyra crayons for Christmas. She will be 5. Her little brother will be about 2 and a half then. Would the block crayons be appropriate for him at that age? We always used to have the Stockmar block crayons in the house when my now adult kids were little, but I don't remember if they tried using them when they were 2(I'm guessing that with the broad sweeps of drawing they tend to do, these would be good for him).

Cindy:
I cannot speak from past experience, as we have only had the block crayons for a short time. But, my 18-month old is starting to draw with them. She would also draw with the stick crayons, but I get nervous about her breaking them more than the blocks. Since they are $$$$ They are easy for little hands to hold. She likes them and is so proud of herself .

I think the blocks are fun even when they are older....(I like them ) but I HAVE heard people say that their kids don't use them a lot.
