It's pouring rain and my Netflix DVD that I'd ordered for today (High School Musical!) arrived with a big huge CRACK in it. 
I could deal with the mess on the dining room table but that's just not appealing.
And all the blogs I've looked at are dead QUIET. (No offense if you've just posted something scintillating.)
What are you ladies doing, anyway?
Anyone baking?
Anyone reading a really good book?
Anyone got a good idea for St. Benedict's feast day on Wednesday?

Ha, ha! You thought I would just leave it at that. Just shows you don't know me very well--I simply cannot pass up the opportunity to respond to "are y ou reading something interesting?"
The book is "Will Mrs. Major Go to Hell?" by Aloise Buckley Heath, oldest sister of William F. Buckley of National Review fame; mother of ten; deceased, sadly.
It's a collection of articles, letters, and various notes by Mrs. Heath. One describes her family's attempt to have a spiritual Christmas a la the von Trapps. (Coke-through-the-nose hilarious.) A note (in verse form) left after staying with her sister, explaining why she used her sister's expensive facial soap to wash the dishes.

I was just sitting here thinking, "That poor sweet boring dear...doesn't even think to tell me the title!"

Let me tell you my Mass adventures today. The baby, age 19 months, pooped. On me. I went to change her. I had no diapers, no wipes, but I thought perhaps I could remove the offensive pieces, line the diaper with a paper towel--fake it til the end of Mass.
No. I couldn't.
So I lined her bloomers with paper towels. I think 7 of them.
She stayed dry until the ride home. But I stood in the narthex with her until the end, just in case.

We have five daughters. While my husband parked the car, we marched into church, late of course, all the way to the front, because if you're late that's the only place that has empty seats.
Dd #3 whispered that she was squished, so I leaned over to tell the dd on the end to move over--there was an ocean of room on the other side of her.
Turns out the dd on the end wasn't mine. But she was in a pink dress, so I didn't figure it out right away.

My four year old daughter made a crown out of Bubblegum and placed it in her hair the other day. Otherwise, not much happening here.

My Mass story from today goes as follows:
We prepare to go up as a family to receive Holy Communion. The little ones, of course, come along for the priestly blessing.
This is my 2 1/2-year-old's favorite part of the Mass, incidentally. "It's time to go up for a blessing, Camille!" She always insists on walking up to the priest herself, and inevitably she gets sidetracked along the way, resulting in a hasty hair grab by her mother (who's bringing up the rear). Ultimately it's just easier at that point to carry her, to her chagrin.
Of course I need to hold her free hand while the priest places the Eucharist on my tongue. In our parish the priest intincts the host so that we receive both the bread and the wine.
Consequently, when we got back to the pew, Camille leaned close to me and sniffed. She then said, "You smell like a blessing!"

hi!
okay, let's see...
reading...well, I am actually re-reading the HP series as I wait so very unpatiently for the next one to come out. How embarrassing.
I am also re-reading Real Learning as I try to convince myself that after 8+ years of homeschooling, I CAN write my own lesson plans...
I get to go shopping for next years school stuff this week, so I am making my list ( and checking it twice! DID YOU KNOW that it is only 169 days until Christmas???) Anyway, shopping is always fun...
I have Miss Potter to watch, but I am not in a movie mood at the moment....
I want to re-arrange my living room furniture, but it is 116 degrees out here and dh wants to just be a blob on the couch....
I made some super duper easy peanut butter cookies that were actually a hit....
and, the Catholic Curriculum Fair that I crazily decided to coordinate was YESTERDAY, so I have some of my sanity back, and slightly less stress
And right before Communion at Mass today, it was HOT (see above  and ds9, who has been sick all week but said he felt better this morning, looks at me, and he is GREEN, and says, "I think I am going to throw up!" We raced out the door.
So, yeah, actually a whole lotta nothing going on here too....

Whoa, Margaret! Bored and rainy? Come south...
Just docked from a job, had to take a boat out of the marina for 24 hours, it's required once a year and this fellow couldn't make it down in time to fulfill the requirements and so hired us. Tough job, let me tell you!
Bad parts first (there are always bad parts of a sail just like any sort of trip and when it is someone else's boat...)
* Tides were against us last night as we waited 2 extra hours for a storm to move through since it was loaded with lightning and potential waterspouts
* Wind shift late at night while anchored let us drag as the boat was insuffiencentlyl rigged with anchor rode (the chain and line).
* Had to beat it out of the anchorage to avoid smushing into a really cute yellow sailboat at 5:30 in the morning - bad way to meet neighbors!
* We pounded back under engine power against the tide again, to our marina to refuel for the remainder of the cruise, which gave me a chance to make REAL coffee too - hurray!
Good things
* 10 hours of sailing an Ericson, great boat, so zippy!
* The water was green today and the sky so very blue.
* Sailing by Mallory Square last night at sunset and seeing the show from the other side - knife jugglers, tight rope walkers, bagpipers...
* My meal plan went terrific and everyone enjoyed all meals!
* The Least Terns were fishing in large groups, my absolute favorite bird! Tiny white bird with black head that hovers above it's selected fish before plunging straight down and grabbing it in it's mouth.
* Sleeping in the cockpit under a sarong and Scorpio.
* 5 dolphins rode our bow last night and 3 this morning, several in the distance tail-slapping as well.
Off to wash the salt off now. I hope the shower is cool!

I loaned her this book...allowed her to take it back to Nebraska with her, a possibility of never seeing it again. But it is SOO good. I'm glad you're enjoying it.
Another OOP book I highly recommend for good laughs, is Phyllis McGinley "A Sixpence in Her Shoe".
I just finished "A Candle for St. Jude" by Rumer Godden. I just started "The Tale of Beatrix Potter a Biography" by Margaret Lane.
I'm supposed to be writing something on St. Nicholas, but I HAVE NOTHING to WEAR, so I spent a few hours with my son buying some maternity clothes. Ghastly adventure. I don't know who designs these clothes, but I have quite a few criticisms....the first one being don't you know most women get more curvy up top and need more room? It's depressing to wear a larger size up top just to accomodate.
And in the midst of self-pity for my lack of clothes, my hair roots are showing, my hair dresser is out of town, and I may have to find a swimsuit for tomorrow, too! Back to shopping?!? I'm 14 weeks tomorrow, a little bump so far, but enough to not fit into my old clothes. Sigh.
And I have to work on my speech for the conference, and find something to wear for THAT occasion, too.

Margaret,
I'm cleaning the learning room and listening to homeschooling talks on MP3. I'm considering painting the walls in here but talking myself out of it. I made a gallon of homemade ice cream, half with shaved expresso-chocolate and half with shaved hazelnut chocolate. There are ... um... 10 kids in my basement waiting for the pizza guy.
So, if you're really bored, bring your kids for pizza and ice cream and help me organize my life--I mean, my learning room!

I have been sick all weekend  . Fever and all. I hate fevers.
I planned my dd's Beatrix Potter unit and then felt very depressed that I don't have any Brambly Hedge books and I am not a millionaire so I can't just happily order them even the OOP ones. And then of course I'm lamenting that I can't just feed my book addiction in general whenever I want.
The luggage is still in the front room along with 1 basket of clean laundry and 1 basket of dirty laundry. They have been there way too long.
I want to run out and buy Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix because I haven't read that one and dh has promised to take me to the movie...how embarrassing.
I am now off to make popcorn for the kids, because that is a very nutritious dinner when I am feeling this sick.
Reading through this thread has been the highlight of my day. And though I may sound very dreary, just sharing my little woes is making me smile. And Jenn, you'll look lovely whatever you're wearing.
