Finally! Thank you for your support !
I purchased a 50# bag of non-fat dry milk from United Dairymen of AZ for $90.00. Devin and I followed this recipe but since our dry milk is different from the powder you purchase at the store (more compact), we fiddled around with the ratios and settled on 1 cup of dry milk to 4 cups water. We used a quart Mason jar and placed it on a heating pad (to keep it off the cold counter top) then pulled the corners up around the jar and secured them with a few rubberbands. We set it on low - only to find that it has an "auto shut off" so we just kept turning it on again from time to time. It worked beautifully! If I'm doing my math correctly, a quart of this yogurt costs ~ .45 - .60!
Here's a yogurt spinach dip recipe that is easy and healthy. We'll also use the yogurt to top whole grain breakfasts, as a occasional substitute for sour cream, and to make smoothies, pancakes, and quick breads.
I almost posted this in Mother Nurture because when life is full of demands, it is amazing how lovely making homemade yogurt has made me feel .
Love,

I did . I couldn't get any volunteers past *the smell* at first . Once *the smell* wore off and I announced it *good*, then there were other tasters. Ian is totally loving it.

Well, my yogurt maker is on the way so I can't wait to try. The Salton model someone had linked to on Amazon was drastically reduced last time I checked my wish list so I ordered it!

Angie,
Did you try putting it in your oven overnight? That sounds so much easier to me.

I'm sure it would work but I'm looking to master a process that doesn't use my cheap-heat-releasing oven. Remember - heat in my AZ house is the enemy .
Love,
