Well, the Virtues notebook we started isn't going so well.

I'm thinking I need a resourse to help with this one. Has anyone used PACE (Emmanuel) or the Virue Tree (CHC)? I really don't want a workbook type thing. I was hoping to help my son make a notebook but I can't seem to get him interested, and, I'm embarassed to say

I guess I really don't know that much about the virues. It seems that they are called different things by different sources.

We have the Book of Virtues which I thought would be a good resource for literature illustrating them, but they are called by different names from other resources I have seen. Boy, do I sound ignorant! Can anyone help?

I'm still working on this one myself. I haven't seen the resources you mentioned so I'll have to check them out.

Did you try reading Mary Ann Budnik's book _Raise Happy Children...Teach them Virtues!_ ? Her discussion of the matter is well rounded. One can't work on virtues if one does not know one's temperment either. Have you found out what your predominant temperaments and therefore predominant faults are and what you're dealing with in yourself and your family? It would be very difficult to do a virtues notebook w/o this information. It is difficult to do a virtues notebook WITH this information. I still believe it to be a worthwhile task and have been thinking much about what it is to bring a working language of virtues into the home.

IOW, living life together KNOWING a list of virtues and some of the sub-virtues that spring from the main list as well as their associated vices. KNOWING a working definition of those words so that when a behaviour challenge comes up, all persons involved can discuss the most appropriate virtues for the moment and what it would mean to put that particular virtue into action.

I personally would like us to understand virtues around here better than we understand the times table or our ABCs. Wouldn't it be nice to hear a four year old describe what faith, hope and charity looks like in the home? To be as familiar with fortitude and prudence as she is with her colors and numbers? I dream...and I get distracted (dishes, laundry...you name it). The task feels large and overwhelming to me so I procrastinate.

Does anyone else out there have a handle on this and could offer some advice? Becky, I'll keep you posted as to our progress here.

I haven't done the virtues, but I was just peeking at my bookshelf for something and this book Character Building by David Isaacs popped out at me. It covers 24 virtues. There was another thread on this book.

Hope that helps a little.

At my ds's preschool the moms gather bi-monthly to study and learn about the virtue the school is focusing on that particular month. I would be happy to email or snail mail you the notes and book recommendations for kindness and integrity. I highly recommend the David Issacs book for learning virtues and ways to teach them to your children.

Yes Marybeth, that would help alot! Thanks! Email or snail mail would be fine - whichever is easiest for you. I think I just need a jump start or something. I've heard of the book by David Isaacs and have been wanting to purchase it. Thanks for the suggestion Jenn. My husband read Boys to Men which is supposed to be really good too. I just didn't want to use that because I thought ds and dh could do that together as sort of a supplement to what we were doing with our notebook.

I would also recommend reading some of James Stenson books or listen to his tapes. His Website hasn't been updated lately. Many of his principles and ideas are repeated in his books, but they are so good, and he talks about the virtues and character development that is the goal in raising our children. My husband just finished reading Father, the Family Protector and I'm reading Compass.

In school, my fundamental moral theology class is based on the virtues and I've found Servais Pinckaers' book "The Sources of Christian Ethics" to be an incredibly clear book on them and how they relate to morality. The book is about 500 pages long and it is really a history book on ethics in the Church, but he does have a 200 page book called "The Pursuit of Happiness-God's Way: Living the Beatitues", which I'm sure would be a great resource if you personally want to learn more about the virtues.
