This Friday will be the first time we celebrate my son's feast day. Does anyone have any suggestions on simple activities we can do?
Thanks a lot.

My boys & I will be making cheddar coins - to go along with the tax collector theme. I am making a real effort to include them in at least one simple recipe a week, and this one fits the bill.
My brother's name is Matthew, so they made him a card and we'll be sending it along to him (he's a lapsed Catholic, but what can he say about cards from his nephews?) They drew a man with a treasure chest next to him, and my oldest wrote "God Bless You on your Feast Name Day". This was all their idea, but I doubt my brother (or parents) will believe me.
We're also shopping that day for our parish food pantry. Colin read a story today about orphans not having birthday parties, and he suggested that we buy cake mixes, frosting and candles to donate to the food pantry this month. So, we'll be buying that (and a few packs of diapers) to help out.

Lorraine,
The craft of the week here is on St. Matthew.
We need to come up with some more fun ideas as well, since my 4yo's middle name is Matthew and we will definitely celebrate the day.

I LOVE the idea for the cheese coins ... the kids will enjoy doing that one! We'll also make simple felt drawstring bags for the tax collector ....

We are going to discuss the symbolism of the 4 evangelists (eagle, lion, etc) and memorize the prayer "Matthew, Mark, Luke and John bless the bed that I lie on....." from A Child's Rule of Life, page 24 (a Mosaic title.) I'm going to work some gold coins in too. I will revisit the same prayer and symbolism discussion on the feast of each Evangelist. Also my husband has an extensive art book collection so I'll ask him to pull out a "Calling of St. Matthew" painting for us to display.

Very cool craft, Maryanne!
We are going to make "piggy banks" out of small plastic coffee containers.
I like the cheese coins, too, Melanie!

I have a Word file of Saint Matthew paintings - our favorite is the Guido Reni Saint Matthew. Also the Calling of Saint Matthew by Caravaggio. I can send it to anyone who is interested. Or upload if someone can let me know how.
We are off to do some copywork and make a cake. We did have gold chocolate coins and hot tea for snack earlier

I found gold coins in the little net bags needed for Mariaane's craft...how cool to empty them of the coins and fill them with little men as well as we talked about St. MAtthew's coversion form tax collector to apostle...and I went to the DMV to change the tax, title, and license on our van we bought at auction. I guess there was no better day than today to be paying taxes!

I found this drink recipe one day and it tickled me. It all could have been written 1/4 of each juice but noooo - toss a shot of Grapefruit in there and live dangerously!
Saint Matthew's Drink
1 shot Cranberry juice
1 shot Grapefruit Juice
1 1/2 cups Ice
1 shot Orange juice
1 shot Strawberry juice
Directions: put all ingredients in blender, mix and enjoy!
I'll bet it is really pretty and would go quite well with Cheese & Chocolate Coins!

Jennifer, this sounds delicious! And I even have a Matthew (20 yo ds - college junior this fall! ) to try it out on, or at the least to send him off with this recipe so he can try it at school while we feast on it and the yummy coins, here!
Thanks for passing this on!
God Bless,

p.s. I pray you all have not had any problems with "Fay."

I just noticed that St. Matthew's feast falls on Sunday, this year. This is Catholic Culture's page from last year, with ideas. The Archdiocese of Washington, DC will be celebrating this feast because their cathedral is named after this saint.

We are going to be reading the story of Saint Matthew in every saint book we have. Teatime with a bundt cake (sour cream coffee cake with gold chocolate coins) and chai. We will be doing coin rubbings and playing Monopoly - that's about as creative as I can get this morning. (and hoping my Matthew does not have a broken arm in which case we will be in the ER!!)

I looked for some traditional Hebrew/Jewish recipes
Potato Latkes seem like a good idea. I might make this for snack and emphasize that St. Matthew wrote his gospel for the Jewish people as opposed to St. Mark who was more interested in his Gentile audience.
An example of St. Matthew's concern for his Jewish audience could be his use of geneologies. I might read the beginning of St. Matthew's Gospel and emphasize the geneology and explain that this was for his Jewish audience.

I've been looking at weather lore lately and there is much associated with different feast days.
Some Old English traditional sayings about St. Matthew's feast day:
St Matthee shut up the bee.
(as cold approaches, the bees don't get out and about as much)
St Matthew brings on the cold dew.
St Matthew get candlestick new,
St Matthi lay candlestick by.
(Matthi is St. Matthias whose feast day was Feb. 24 on old calendar - would coincide with earlier darkness in Sept. and less in Feb.)
Matthew's Day, bright and clear,
Brings good wine in the next year.
Since it's cloudy and rainy here, don't think we'll be having good wine here -
