I'm considering for the March Composer of the Month, a composer who was associated with the monastery of St. Florian in Austria.

When I looked up St. Florian and found out he is the patron saint of fire fighters, I thought there must be something very interesting here for children.

Any suggestions? A simple craft to combine with listening to the music of ... (Trying to build up some interest by not mentioning the name of the composer.)

Why don't you set up water chimes as an activity for the children, reminding them that water is used to douse fires and symbolic of St. Florian. If you are really brave, you could have them put out a small fire (maybe a candle) with the water afterward!

Helen,

You could do a little play about the story of St. Florian and why he's the patron of firefighters -- my kids (the little hambones

) really "get it" when we do a little play.

Just a thought!

And here he is..

We're fond of St. Florian here and my oldest son was St. Florian for last All Saints' Day.

We had some play armor but we made the skirt part of the armor with cardboard and duct tape.. and covered soccer shin guards with duct tape as well. oh yes and the spear was cardboard on a broomstick.. covered with duct tape.

Perhaps a tour of the fire dept?
