Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm thinking about getting the following books but I'd like some "real life" reviews.

Catholic Traditions In The Home And Classrooms: 365 Days To Celebrate A Catholic Year

The Big Book of Catholic Customs and Traditions for Children's Faith Formation

You can get them both on Amazon for under $30 and with free shipping. Are they good? Are the crafts doable or do they require lots of time and supplies? Are they good for young kids (my oldest is almost 6)? Any other recommendations?

Thanks for any help!

Hi Mommy D,
I bought the Big Book recently and I do like it. For most feast days it has an explanation of the feast, a prayer, and some easy activity(ies). For a lot of the saints' days, it has a cute little story about the saint. For John Bosco, it had a story called, The Saint and His Big, Ugly, Dog, which my boys enjoyed, and remembered later.
It doesn't cover EVERY saint on the calendar, which I would have preferred, and it does throw in a lot of secular holidays like Groundhog day, but overall I think it's a good resource!

I'd say if you're looking for simple crafts, The Big Book has some easy, good ideas for you the younger children. It's organized alphabetically by craft name, which is frustrating to me to find things. If you like glue, construction paper, paper plates and that kind of crafts...this is the book.

I don't own Ann Ball's book, thought I've been eyeing it. Not every day is a "craft" but thoughts and ideas for the day. I think it's pretty good, but the craft ideas were a little more than "The Big Book" if I remember correctly.

Oh, viewing Jane's review, I'd just mention that Beth Brangian McNamara has two books. There's the one that is the general
Big Book of Ideas for Children's Faith Formation
and then the other for the Liturgical Year, The Big Book of Catholic Customs and Traditions for Children's Faith Formation. I was giving my opinion about the Ideas one.

I own the Big Book of Catholic Customs...and I love it. It's broken down by month and it gives a lot of ideas that aren't very difficult to follow through on--believe me, I'm very craft challenged. And, not all of the things are crafty either. I bought this book because I saw it on Dawn's blog and fell in love with the activities.
