Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

we had the most fun this morning and I thought I'd share what we did.

We were discussing what this feast is about...
St Helena and finding the true cross...

and we discussed how appropriate it is that tomorrow is the memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows and when through all 7...

THEN we did our craft we offered up our crosses to add to His cross.

Before hand:
I made a 3 foot cross out of butcher paper (poster board would have been better, but we use what we have) and rubbed the side of a brown crayon on it for a more wood look. Then I made a smaller cross template out of the back cover of a spiral notebook.

Then I took everything cutable out and let them decide what they wanted to draw their cross onto. (the wallpaper scraps were the best) Then I let them clue what we had hand within the lines. After they were done decorating, they cut them out and we added them to the bigger cross.

While everyone was cutting and decorating we talked about comon things they've heard "offer it up", "add it to Jesus' suffering", "we all have a cross to bear", and what those sayings mean.

If we carry our cross alone [everyone held their finished cross in their hands] it becomes heavy and a burden and keeps us from seeing Jesus on the cross He bore for us. [Ask them to imagine hold that paper cross FOREVER or order them to not set it down for any reason for a couple of hours. Even though it's only paper it gets in the way a lot and can become a hardship.]

If we add it to His cross though
[attach to larger cross],
it frees us to use our hands to help others
[after placing personal cross on Jesus' hold a hands until everyone has placed theirs]
and lets God help us
[put hands in prayer position and close with a prayer]

Yes, it did take most of the morning but we are very proud of our accomplishment!

ETA: I really do know the difference between feast and solemnity and memorials! I just typed in a rush without putting as much thought or proofreading! Sorry.. so embarrassing!

That is a great idea!! I've always struggled with the idea of "offering up" so it's been difficult to explain it to my children. That's such a wonderful idea. Thank you for posting it!!
