ia a very good book on the Civil War, though the ending is sad.
books on Abe Lincoln... this thread may be helpful as well.
A Book in Time has a list for the Civil War and here for the War of 1812.
Time Spies- this one looks interesting for 1812
Civil War unit... this thread looks like it has a lot of good books in it.

I'm still working on a chronological history listing of picture books. I do have these so far for War of 1812 and Civil War. Do you want Underground Railroad as well, which fits here in time?

Adding: The Silent Witness: A True Story of the Civil War (Robin Friedman) - Shares the story of Lula McLean and her doll. The family lived on a plantation overlooking Bull Run and left after the First Battle of Bull Run - moving to Appomatox Courthouse, where the war officially ended in their parlor with the surrender of Lee to Grant. The doll left in the room was a "silent witness" to this piece of history. Very informative.
And although I included The Cemetery Keepers of Gettysburg in the above list, I had not yet read it. Was basing it on the inside look at Amazon. Well it's a  book. Wow- great story, great illustrations. Also based on a true story taken from Elizabeth Thorn's writing which is considered to be one of the best civilian accounts of a Civil War battle. Particularly cool since we visited the cemetery this past summer. Wish I had known about the book beforehand!

Just coming to post the same book, Mary! We were at Ollie's yesterday and I saw this book. I knew I had to buy it because it starts with Manassas! It's lovely, and being all local places, it's a perfect book to add to our shelves.

Oh, yes, had forgotten about that one. Taylor Morrison's books are very good - on the longer side text wise, but full of info.
I see Patricia Polacco has a new book - sort of a time travel in the history museum story about the battle of Antietam and Abraham Lincoln. Just reserved it. Just in Time, Abraham Lincoln
And speaking of the Civil War - I'll be starting a separate thread in history forum. This April will mark the start of the sesquicentennial of the Civil War. All around the country there are tons of events and exhibits planned over the next 4 years to remember the Civil War on the 150th anniversary. It will be a good time to do extra study of this time period.

Your older kids might enjoy The Civil War by PBS They do a masterful job of telling the story from the eyes of the people who lived it. Very well done.
I know it's not a book but I saw the ages of your kids and thought I'd pass that along.
