Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Mr. Lincoln's Whiskers

By Burke Davis
Illustrated by Douglas Gorsline

keywords: Abraham Lincoln, president, history, letters, whiskers, trains

This is the story of Lincoln's encounter with a little girl named Grace Bedell first through a letter that she wrote him advising him that he should grow a beard and then again when she met him in person. There are quite a few interesting and humorous tidbits about the Lincolns. We very much enjoyed it. The illustrations are done in a sepia tone giving this book a vintage feel and the full texts of the original letters are included in the back of the book. We found this at our library just in time for Lincoln's birthday!

We loved this book!

There is also a "reader" (for ages 7-9) called Grace's Letter to Lincoln that is good too.
