Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I posted the below in the thread about books about dolphins, but I also had questions about rabbit trails in general:

Thank you all! I put alot of things on hold at the library and will go pick them up today. I also put Flipper in our queue at Netflix. We've never really done a unit study/rabbit trail before. How should I document all this? SHOULD I document all this? Notebook? Narration? Just let her wallow in all things dolphin?
Thanks!
Jennifer

I would document naturally as I went along. Color pictures, narrate, make craft projects, print out photographs. Then you can decide whether to make it all into it's own lapbook or just include it in a folder. You could also show her samples of lapbooks and notebooks and ask her if she'd like to make one.

I agree with Janette ... document naturally, then see what comes of it, and how you might want to save or organize it.

Also, with this kind of learning, I usually document more for myself than for the kids. At the end of the year, my kids could tell you all sorts of fascinating details about the things they learned, but I seem to have forgotten everything! So, I keep my own notes, just things I jot down in a log -- you'll be covering all kinds of things that fall under "science" (what kind of animal is a dolphin? Habitat? Diet? Social behavior?)

If you'd like to be able to look back and see what you've covered under various "subjects", keeping a journal or log of activities and discussions can help you see how much learning has really taken place, and where it falls in curriculum requirements (if you need to document those for your state.)
