How do you handle sick days at your house when you have all your kids studying the same subject together? Ex: you learn history as a family; each child on his/her own level.

Now let's say that 2 of your 5 kids are down sick with a bug, but the other three are perfectly fit and able to do school work. Do you skip history on the sick days and just have the healthy ones do independent work, or do you move ahead with history as planned? Do the sick kids then make up the work they missed? When?

Sick days really seem to throw a wrench in our plans here when one child is well and the other is sick since we do so much together.

I'd love to hear what other families have as their MO on those days.

That would make it challenging.

I think I would have some relevant things to do, that would still advance the topic.

Perhaps a guided group project, that could be presented to the ones that aren't able to do the work. Project could take form of stop motion, puppet-show, formal speech, panorama, etc yet still relevant to help move forward in your studies, and presenting it could help 'catch up' the sick ones without them having to do all the 'missed' work, maybe even entertain them while their sick.

A way to keep moving forward and not leave everyone behind.

It would depend on how often you've got kids down sick. Chronic illness is a different matter.

We don't get sick too often here.. not enough to get out of school etc. So when we're sick it usually lasts a while (going through everyone) but I'd rather focus on tending the sick than in trying to pretend that life is going on as normally for everyone else. It's not. Our family helps each other and it may be more beneficial for all the kids to get to do something together to help the one who's sick than to not mess up their school schedule. Plus visiting the sick is one of the Corporal Works of Mercy.

That doesn't mean that most of school can't be done, with the sick one doing what they can as well.. and maybe subbing in some sort of video that will go with the history or science that didn't get done. And of course if you're sharing text there's no reason it can't be read aloud with the one who's sick.

If the sick ones are still up for a read-aloud, we do that. If not, I try to get a relevant movie from Amazon Prime.

...Or sometimes we just skip a day or two.

We normally skip a day or two- usually we all get whatever it is

or I have the sick child listen in and do what he/she can.

However, this time ds had a stomach bug for several days, and having him try to do anything seemed ridiculous- he was in no shape for it-, whereas having dd do nothing seemed equally nonproductive.

I did have dd take her yearly standardized test while ds was sick, and they did watch Liberty Kids and Magic Schoolbus, but I realize I need to have a better plan if we run into this situation again.

Perhaps I will focus on a special project as suggested- I like that idea.
I'm kicking myself now- I could have done some American Girl history with dd; she really likes stuff like that.
