Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Does anyone have ideas for how to make the first day of school extra special? I've done a special snack or had little gifts (schools supplies with bows) when they got up in the morning, but I'm trying to come up with something original to surprise them on the first day this year. Any ideas?

Here is a great discussion on a Schultuete for the first day of school. I've always wanted to do this but never have. Maybe this will be the year!

We've had a scavenger hunt in the past and they find new school supplies and fun stuff at the end. This year they just asked for the stuff.    I bought them each two books and one book for them to share and wrapped them. They really didn't need any school supplies otherwise I would have done that. I also made on of their favorite pies to eat at the end of our first day.

For our first day school this year, we went down to the creek (it runs through our land) and had school down there for the day. We brought cinnamon buns and orange juice for breakfast. We talked about Gilgamesh while we ate. For lunch, my husband brought down the barbecue so we could have a picnic. It was a special, fun day for us as it was something out of the ordinary.

That sounds really fun, Julia!

This is OT, but how do you handle Gilgamesh? My 2nd grader is studying Ancient history this year, and I have the Gilgamesh pictures books, but I was concerned because it start out with "he was half-god and half-man." Since she's only a 2nd grader, I don't want to confuse her, kwim?

My dd usually makes a sign and we take pictures in front of the school "bus" (dh's car). The kids then all get in the car, my dh drives them around the cul-de-sac and then we take pictures of them going in the front door of the "school". They love the joke. We usually have some type of special breakfast as well. (I need to get on that for Monday.)
