I've been doing a little research, and of course my library doesn't carry these older Catholic titles I'm trying to find.
Some loans have been cancelled, others are starting to add up. One was cancelled to make it $15, and then Boston College can't find their copy. 
Anyway, I started thinking that maybe it would be to my advantage to try and get a way to use some college libraries, like Catholic University, for one.
Has anyone done this? Is it just too expensive or very restricted to non-college students?

I'd look into it for sure. I don't have to pay for interlibrary loans, and I haven't requested anything in a while, but back when I was on a DE Stevenson kick, most of the ones I got via ILL were from the local university library. Seems obscure to me, so I wouldn't be surprised if they also have a lot of the older OOP religion, science and history titles. My neighbor was a professor there and is semi-retired but retains office and library privileges and has offered to get anything for us we might want. I really should get more organized in taking him up on it.

I think every college/university is different in how they handle this. One of the universities here has a great visitors card option for outside folks. Not all have something like that. I would check and see.

Ask your reference librarian. In my area (Western NYS) we have a regional program called InfoPass that is open to any adult with a need to do research, and it gets you access to most of the colleges and universities, plus high schools and some corporate libraries. (Who knew some companies had their own private libraries?) It is sponsored by the Western New York Council of Librarians. There might be options in your region.
If you went to a college, you might be able to get alumni access to the library. I can at my alma mater.
Contact the college or university directly. It might have an access plan for the community or general public.
The NYC public library system will issue a library card to any resident of New York State.
If all else fails it might be cheaper to try to buy an old copy of the book if you can find it.

I also purchase if I can. But the library system here isn't so great.. and while we don't pay for ILL, it can take weeks to get something and the last time I did that, they goofed up by somehow putting the book in the system with a temp number and then not checking it back in but sending it back.. took months to get that straight.

How are they charging you? Per request?
I have to pay $2 per request here, even if I wind up not getting the book.
I agree with Jodie that it's frustrating to use ILL- you never know if/when you might get the item. Some come right away, some never.
I believe some colleges do offer a library card to nonstudents for a fee.

Well, I do buy the books if they are cheaper. But there are some "newer" book that I use ILL to see if I want to buy them if they are expensive. But there are also some books I'd rather just pay a quick loan fee because I'm going to read through once. My house is overrunning with books. Sometimes it can be too much of a good thing. 
My ILL charges $3.00 for each request, so that adds up. It's the special books I've been requesting that are costing more.
And these are books or rare pamphlets from 30s-40s that can't be purchased anywhere. Trust me, I've looked!
I appreciate some of the hints. I'm going to talk to my librarian and ask for more help here.

Oh, and I have also checked out some more scholarly books, the dissertations and such. When the starting cost is over $60, I'm not paying that!

I haven't used our system in awhile, but it is free and there are three layers - County Libraries (which I am in versus the city of SD), SD Circuit which includes the major colleges in the area, and Link which includes many public libraries including college ones throughout the state. All books are sent to my local library. It is free, but the fines are steep if returned late, like $1.00 per day.

This makes me grateful that our library doesn't charge us. There is a Seminarian College a couple hours away that is in our ILL system and I can usually fine old Catholic titles.
