Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Homeschooling Throughout the Summer

Got this link from a friend, and I thought it was a very inspiring article.

I love this mom's method of homeschooling in the summer: math and reading everyday, and then the rest is delight-directed by her children.

I think this is great- it is still schooling, but it provides a break for everyone from the normal routine and also gives a chance to dig more into subjects and activities that would normally slide during the school year (at least at my house ).

Her time frame is also more relaxed in the summer... fitting school in at different times, more field trips, etc.

I can really see my family doing something similar this summer. At my house I know that would mean a lot more art and science... things the kids love. We have already planned to delve into photography- learning to take better pictures- this summer. I would also like to do more liturgical crafting. Somehow the same old saints coloring sheets need a shake up

If you read this article, please share your thoughts!

I like her emphasis on more delight learning in the summer and I'm going to check out that music link. Thanks so much for sharing it!

This is pretty much we do...it's just enough to give a reason to still get up and dressed by a certain time each day but not too much to infringe on summer fun.

This summer my 9 year old will just be reading one chapter from Life of Fred and doing one 3rd grade math review exercise each day. My 6-year-old will pretty much continue her kindergarten curriculum of alternating math and reading each day before she starts a heavier 1st grade load in August.

Oh! This is pretty much what we have decided to do. Well, more in the spring and fall when the weather is the mildest. I pared down our school to:

:: Morning Prayers
:: 1 or 2 short readings or lessons from the Morning Basket (covers catechism/religious instruction, natural history, poetry, geography, latin, and nature study on a weekly basis)
:: Math (one lesson or one page, depending on the kid)
:: Copywork (5-10 minutes)
:: Reading/Grammar (one short lesson or story)
:: History (one short story with a narration from my oldest)

Then I turn them loose. I figure we will keep the other lessons for the very hot times or the very cold times or rainy days.

The only other thing I added was that my kids have to 1. spent at least three hours outside (weather permitting), 2. spend some time reading on their own, and 3. build something (with Lego, Meccano, K'nex, etc) before they can use any screens during the week.
