our day.
I was looking for a handbell instead of a timer or my voice to ease transitions thru our daily schedule. I came across this and was intrigued. I like the idea of it, but I also like the idea of the bell and being able to ring really loud and fast when necessary. I think a bell would be better for that. I have a picture in my head of myself ringing a bell, having a hard time thinking of this that way. What do you think? What do you do at transition time?
TIA and God Bless,
Anita

Anita,
our day is broken into time slots. Large ones.
We have morning , middle of the day, and afternoon sessions.
We pin our day on morning tea, Aangelus, lunch, Divine Mercy-if we are still working that long.
Maths is untimed, as sometimes it requires longer than i would time dd. It just adds stress, So I don't time.
So i use the microwave timer to round a lesson up.
I have the angelus and divine mercy on alarms of my iphone.
Its a gentle way to break the day up.
God Bless
Leanne

We use a bell, but for prayers and meals. Sounds nicer than bellowing over the paddock. I do wonder what visiting children think when the bell is rung and my children come running shouting, "Food". mind you visiting children run too

Hahaha...that is funny.
We haven't missed an Angelus since our reminder.

I love the Angelus and Divine Mercy reminders! What a great way to pace your day! We have a huge iron bell on a post that we use to call the kids in when they are outside in the woods or the river. I don't have an indoor bell though. I'm "sound sensitive" so even when we did have one I was reluctant to ring it!

Anita, I like your idea a lot, and also appreciate the thought of a reminder for the Angelus and Divine Mercy chaplet!
We've enjoyed using bells in our household for many years. Dc (and now gc) like taking turns ringing our bells, with permission, to call everyone to meals, study, family discussions or prayertime. Being assigned bell-ringer can be a pleasant and positive motivator!
We have numerous bells for indoor or outdoor use, mainly to spare us from having to project our voices when calling dc, gc and guests. I have a voice that doesn't carry very well, inside or out, so bells spare me from risking a migraine in the effort to be heard.
We have two inside wall bells; one is a brass three bell windchime with a chain and clapper between the three bells (not too loud and softly melodic)~ like this (it includes the bracket, ours didn't): http://cgi.ebay.com/Vtg-Brass-Wall-Mount-3-Bell-Wind-Chime-I ndia-/200641309758?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2eb7276c3e ~ it hangs from a cast iron bracket next to our family prayer kneeler ~ it resembles bells used during the Consecration at Mass, but was purchased at Goodwill for a song ~ it looks like it was made in India. Our other hanging bell is ceramic and extends out fom a cast iron bracket in our dining area ~ it doesn't have the louder sound of metal, making it nice to use when a less forceful sound is desirable. Hangings bells assure that littler hands aren't constantly ringing the bells at less opportune times.
We have numerous hand bells, inherited from family members or purchased here and there over the years. Some favorites among dc and gc are brass barbell shaped bells in three sizes ~ round bells at each end of a round center bar, each etched with stars or other designs ~ these are especially nice when everyone wants to make music while singing. The largest is loud enough to call dc inside when they are close to the house! If we need to call them from further out on our land, we use a smaller farm bell, attached to a porch post.
There's something very special about using bells that captures both childrens' and adults' attention and lifts the soul! "C'mon, ring those bells" (or chimes)!!!

Thank you all so much for your responses. I think I am going to get a handbell to start and go from there. I might need both. Dh is convinced the mallet from the other one would have help getting lost.
I had actually started using a whistle I had leftover from VBS a few years ago. I just hate the sound. It's so harsh. But, they do come right away.
God Bless,
Anita

Servant
Your descriptions of bells reminds me of an old Ma and Pa Kettle episode, Ma Goes to Paris, or something like that. To tell the truth I often think of it when I ring my bell.
Ma went to Paris and came back enthused to use a xylophone to call her family for dinner. First night home she 'played; the scales. Nobody came, so she ends back with her usual style and hollers "Come and get it!". Often giggle when I remember.
