I'm not sure exactly what books to put there. Which ones do you store in your kids' rooms? I've read so many posts about how everyone sorts and classifies their books but I prob. missed something along the way.
We do have a mostly "designated" school room but with limited space, I don't have a lot of our library type books in here...it's mostly school-y stuff. I'm wondering what exactly to keep in their individual rooms. The 2 girls (11 and almost 3) share a room so they're def. not reading the same kind of books but I have some nice bookcases in their rooms. They have their own religious books and more the chapter book series type books in my daughter's room and reader books in son's room.
We have an upstairs gameroom that's mostly just for play but I thought about putting the overflow of baby/toddler books up there to conserve space down here and minimize clutter. What else could I consider putting up there (in a space that I visit infrequently) so it would mainly be for "not frequently used" books? I have the seasonal books in my son's closet...I guess I could move those there.

Each of our children's bedrooms have bookcases. What goes in there are their more personalised favourites, my boys for example have their Ranger's Apprentice set, our dd8 has her Little House Collection, our oldest dd16, has more books that she would only read, Jane Austen and Christian romances.
So with two girls I'd go for more girly type books.

we do very much like Erin.
low shelves get the general board books and picture books that are just fun. then age the books as they go up so that my oldest girl has the top shelf mostly filled with Shannon Hale, CS Lewis, Alcott, Montgomery etc
then I have shelves in the main part of the house for specific historical books (by era.. only current era out) scienc-y books etc. Curriculum is near my office area.
Oh there are some books like the American Girl books.. that will go on shelves in the girls room EXCEPT when that era is out in the living room and then I'll move it out to the living room just so we don't forget it.. because they're fun and a good level for my middle kids for historical fiction and read alouds.

In the kid's rooms are their favorite "down-time" book series, books they enjoy reading for fun --
The Happy Hollisters
The Boxcar Children
The Bobsey Twins
Curious George
Thomas the Tank Engine
Pippi Longstocking
Nancy Drew
Black Beauty
ALL of our MANY horse books - Margeurite Henry books
Swallows and Amazons series
Praire River series
The Texas Panhandle series
American Girl
...and several other individual titles and personal favs.
I do have to occasionally go into their rooms and gather up some of the books which should live in historical fiction and put them back on MY shelves. But, I guess I shouldn't really complain about that, should I?

Thanks ladies! It sounds like I'm right on track! I just wasn't sure if I should move some of these books out to a different area. May be I'm still drooling over Erin's library pics from the other post and thinking about that and having everything more consolidated.

Who isn't? What a delightfully inspirational library! And, I know Erin had to wait soooo long to get those books out of boxes and on those shelves! What a reward for her patience!
Glad you've got an idea and a direction for the books in the kids rooms, Kathryn! Have fun!

We place all of dds books that are gifts to her in her room, and all others on the h/s shelves.
So again similar to Erin, girlie type books in dd room. She has just gone through her room, and has asked for some of her 'baby, kiddie' type books to be placed on a bookcase in our living room, for children when they come over.
our other dc had a similar arrangement with books in there rooms.

I put board books on the lower shelves in my son's room for when toddlers come over. Then there are two shelves of "twaddle" type books that he loves. These include "toy" books. I put the books that are a little nicer on his top shelves. Those include his Usborne books, bedtime stories, picture books that were given as gifts from family, etc.
Then I put the children's classics, such as A Child's Garden of Verses, Winnie-the-Pooh, books from my mother's childhood, and our religious books up on a high shelf and offer to read them often.
