There's a brief discussion of this in the Workboxes thread (p.4). But I'm wondering what you actually get with the download, and why it would be good to get the download instead of just taking the concept and DIY? I'm also wondering if anyone has used this who uses a more choice-based/leaning toward the unschooly sort of method?

(I'm battling a cold today and it's raining, so I'm feeling a bit slow. If all of this is actually on the FYN website, please forgive me and feel free to tell me so!)

I'm all ears on this too. I went to the FYN site but I'm not able to quite get my brain around what it is in detail.

Are there any examples or samples online? I'd like to understand more about what it is and what it looks like. I can't seem to find anything online other than a description of how great it is.

God bless,
Christine

Check out Full-Year Notebook System. (I hope the link works.)

I have tweaked the system a bit to work for me (what can I say...I'm a tweaker. LOL

The general idea is that the student has a paper for every assignment. These papers are filed into a notebook by the week they are to be completed.

Here's what I do...warning...this sounds super complicated to set up, but once it is set up, it flows effortlessly. My kids and I love it.

Each student has two notebooks, #1 a really fat one for the full year and #2 a smaller one for the week. In #1, there is a numbered divider for each week we have school (so 36 dividers) and a completed work section with dividers by subject. In #2, there is a divider for each school day (so 5 dividers) and a completed work divider. I also have a place-keeper divider in #1, so I can flip right to where we are in the year. I also personalized the color and style of the label page that slides into the front and side pockets of the binder.

Now, for the assignments...(I do everything on the computer and print, but you could hand write each page.) Each assignment gets a paper to load into the notebook. If the student will need to write out answers (like math or Latin), I print on notebook paper. If it is reading or discussion or computer work, I print on colored paper (child specific). The page might look like this...

Algebra 1
Assignment 1
Lesson 1

or

Science
Assignment 1
Read pp 1-5 and answer questions 1-5 on p 5.

I number the assignments in case the sheets get mixed up.
Some subjects (especially for the Littles) are workbooks. I tear out the pages and file them into the notebook, without printing a separate assignment sheet. And, some assignments are recurring, like practice piano, or are not super structured, like reading practice. I laminated a sheet for these and keep it in Notebook #2 and reuse.

So behind each tab in Notebook #1, there might be 5 math papers, three science papers, four Latin papers, and so on. At the beginning of the week, I take the week's worth of work from #1 and file each page behind the appropriate day divider in #2. I also take the completed work from #2 and grade, record and file into the subject divider in #1.

Then, merging into the workboxes...each morning (or the evening before), I take the assignment sheets (and any that are laminated) and file each into a separate numbered hanging files in the "workbox" file box.

OK...now that your head is spinning and you are totally confused. I will say that it took me a good little chunk of time last summer to get everything set up, but it does not take more than a couple minutes during the week to switch out the notebooks and load the workboxes each day. All the hard and time-consuming work is done. I started using this system because I was frustrated with feeling like I was always planning at the last minute, and the kids were always waiting on me to give them assignments. It also seemed like we were never getting to the funner activities because I would run out of time and steam before I got to the planning of them. This system has solved those issues.

Please, feel free to ask more questions if something needs more clarification.

Here is my post from the workboxes thread. I will have to look back through the e-book...honesty, I don't remember much about it.

If you need more clarifications, please ask away!

OK...I have refreshed my memory. The Full Year Notebook System e-book has step by step instructions for setting up the system. Here's the table of contents.

TABLE OF CONTENTS
Welcome to the Full-Year Notebook System
Getting Started
Analyzing Your Curriculum
Using the Library
Using Living Books
Weekly Assignments
Credit For Transcripts
Other Organizational Ideas

Overall, I'd say there is some good information here. (even though I had forgotten about most of it LOL)

I haven't seen the notebook system you mention so maybe it is something other than what I am thinking, but this simple Catholic notebook system for organizing a child's material may help someone. It's been up for years.

I was wondering if it was like the Avilian system. I've used that in the past and it works great. We're doing well with the workboxes but if we stop using them for some reason I'd probably go back to something like the Avilian method.

I always thought the Avilian method looked nice, but I never tried it because I envisioned lots of papers on the floor. If they are intact in a workbook, at least there is not tons of papers loose. Has anyone who has used this method found that they have papers everywhere or are your dc able to contain them in a folder or notebook?

Karen started me on this. I use a tweaked version of this.

For each week, I have a sheet of paper in their notebook for each assignment. If they need to write the answers on a separate sheet of paper, that assignment sheet has the available space. I put in the date, start time, end time, mom check and student redo section on the bottom.

Each child has a weekly notebook where I put each week's assignment divided up into days. They know to go to each day's assignment, pull out the sheets, and they get to work. It's very similarly to workboxes except it's not as visual. I may use a combined system this coming school year once I figure out what I want to do.

It's always tweak, tweak, tweak.

KC --

I forgot to mention that I keep track of time started, finished and total time spent (at least for the big girls) as well as date and mom check. Thanks for the reminder. You'll have to come over and look at how it all looks with the notebooks and my filebox/workboxes.

Ah. I knew I had seen something like this before, somewhere... thanks for the link!   I'm looking for ways to provide more structure for my 12 yo.

The note book part is just like the Avilian Method. Except maybe the part that in FYN you put every paper needed for the year in the folder too and I can't remember if you do that in the Avilian Method or not. What I mean is that if an assignment requires a piece of paper you put it in the notebook with the assignment & childs name written at the top. So other than a pencil and art supplies everything is in there.

Also, the FYN system has wonderful instruction on how to plan the year. It is really great information for those who make up their own plan, use living books, or tweak anothers plan.

There is a lot of planning pages in the system. It is not just put the papers in the folder. I will expand more in a sec on this.

It depends on how unschooly you are. If you use any kind of curriculum on a regular basis you can use it to set that portion up and then wing the rest.

So, I got my FYN paperwork out and this is what you get:
1.Basic instructions on how to set up the notebook
2.A worksheet to help you plan exactly how many days of school you will likely accomplish factoring in life (I guess if you have to do X amt of days this is irrelevant)
3. A system of analyzing your curriculum to help you break down exactly how much can be accomplished in a day, including a worksheet.
4. Then figuring out how to spread that book over the school year.
5. You get assignment sheets to fill out. It is set up to give the student flexibility in deciding what to do when as long as they have all the assignments done by the end of the week.
6. You also get a wonderful method for scheduling & choosing which library books to use and tracking when to check them out.
7. There is also a section on how to work in living books which is very similar to the library section
7. Also how to

I have found the planning information very helpful. It helps me realize what we can actually accomplish over the year. And to prioritize to eliminate the least important things painlessly.

Our papers stayed in the notebooks. They would take out the one sheet they need and when they are finished they put it back into the notebook in the finished section. At the end of the week I took the finished work out an put in the new work from my master binder.

You know, we DID have a problem with papers when I used the Avilian system, but I think that is because it was hard for my younger kids to keep opening and closing the binder - or maybe they were just lazy! But, I remedied it by having them put their completed work in a box, instead of back into the binder. Then at the end of every week I would sit down with that child and we would go through their work and talk about how nicely they wrote this or how accurately they did that, or how they needed to work on something. It was actually a very nice tradition that the kids all looked forward to. Now that I am thinking about that, I might have to re-incorporate it into our week. It did take extra time, but it was time well spent.

This is off-topic, but the review part sounds like a great idea. Sort of Kolbe-ish or Ignatian?

I think that is the key to the organization, too, setting aside that time each week to keep on top of where the kiddies are in their understanding.

I am definitely going to work on my full year- for those that have bought the FYN, would you think it is worth the $? Or would the Avilian system work as well? I know it's hard to make that judgment, but I am trying to be more thrifty!    So I can then spend more $ on books!

Thanks!

The system is the same so if all you need to accomplish your notebook is the system then you don't need the FYN book. But if you have any issues determining how much you can cover reasonably in a year or how to spread out the assignments over the year, then purchasing the FYN is a great asset. The FYN gives you worksheets and forms to help in planning and an assignment sheet to use.
I was not disappointed with my purchase. I was always trying to do more than we could actually do and the FYN helped me to pare it down.

It sounds a lot like Dawn's File Crate System, or at least how I use it (when I am on top of things).

What if you don't finish all the work for a week? Do you just move it into the next week?

I like the idea of going over the work at the end of the week. I am absolutely going to start this.

I'm wondering this too. I like the idea of a non-dated list because we don't always get to everything planned for each day. For those using a file system, if you move things to the next folder, what happens to what is in that folder already?
