Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Maureen Wittmann has taken the checklist for planning a unit study that she shared in the her book For the Love of Literature, and adapted it to a pdf form so it can be downloaded from her website.

It will be a helpful resource when planning unit studies.

How do you plan for unit studies? Share your ideas and suggestions.

Thanks for the heads up on this one Mary, she has a great checklist!

I usually plan with my library search window open and ready to place holds for picture books and non-fiction stuff, and other than that I kind of wing it

Just kidding! Thanks again for the link to Maureen's list!

Thank you, Mary and Maureen. I love checklists!

As of late, I haven't been planning unit studies as much as following rabbit trails and logging what we did after the fact. Sometimes we even just give a verbal account of our studies to dad at our weekly family meeting.

Love,

Ooooh! Thank you, Mary!    Our unit studies are usually quite spontaneous, so I'm sure I could better organize and take advantage of some learning opportunities that I'm overlooking. They almost always spring from a rabbit trail for us, and quickly evolve into an entire unit study.

I'm all about a handy, pretty checklist to keep me accountable - even if it would just be used to record what we did, or for me to mentally jog my brain cells to see if there might be another resource to pursue.

Thank you, Mary and Maureen!

This is pretty much how I start. When the ideas are flowing, I think back over threads I've read here for book ideas and then tend to think about lapbooking and different school subjects at the same time. And I always try to think of a fieldtrip.

For example, in our snake study I thought:
Math: cooking with snake?/write recipe card
Geography: find line art of VA and have kids mark the area where a specific snake lives.
Writing: write a descripion of your favorite snake. Mount next to snake circle book
Science: snake life cycles/write on snake circle book
do vocab page

etc.

However, I've never been satisfied that I am doing enough and at the appropriate levels, and we don't always make a book in the end. I just seem to brainstorm that way.

I'm really excited for the checklist to help me get a little structure into the planning process since it's an area I always feel insecure about. Thanks for the link!
