I have a bean pole 14 year old - he's nearly 6 feet tall now, and weighs in just about 115 pounds. He is very active, but just so thin!! He eats like, well, a teenage boy!! Any suggestions on helping him gain?

Time, age.. my dh was pretty much skin and bones when I met him, his dad and one of his brothers too.. other brother was a tiny bit more stocky.. and not really anything to do about that.. but as he got older he did add good bulk.. more muscle, more filled out, but until then.. best thing to do is teach them to eat good foods and reasonable amounts.. that it's not ok to eat 3 desserts just because they can and not gain.. because it's likely at some point they'll be learning the hard way that when you eat 3 desserts that you will gain from it.

Don't worry -- he will! And your food-budget will notice!
My five brothers all went thru their early teen years this way and then filled out nicely when they hit college. My now 6'3"+ son did the same thing -- actually he was pretty geeky at 14 (just don't tell HIM that! ) and has filled in ....
God works in mysterious ways!

I remember this too, from a few friends from jr. high.....TOTALLY SKINNY, , even when they graduated.....and then in their early-20's they came back from college, and my parents nearly fainted from surprise! Completely muscular and "filled out!"
My husband was a skinny 15-yo, and by the time he graduated from high school was 195 lbs. @ 6' tall!

I don't have any advice. My nearly 14yo is 6'1" and 120 lbs. The trickiest thing is finding jeans & trousers to fit. He needs 28"w x 36"l and it's not worth the special order, as he wears through the knees right away. So we order 30x36 from JCPenney and he wears belts. :) My husband, his brothers, and his nephews all started out tall and very thin, and once they hit their 20's filled out nicely. So, I just encourage Andrew to eat healthily because nature will eventually take it's course, I think.

same boat here. all my kids start out chunky, but once they are about 4 yrs old, they start to really thin out. You 14 yr old is meatier than mine! Mine is about 5'7" and I bet can't beat 100 lb. They eat like horses, but they play and work like tornados!
Someone on another board recommended grapefruit seed extract and we saw very slight increase on my skinniest boy. Nothing dramatic, but something.

I asked about this once
You can get good-quality whey protein at Costco -- quite expensive, but I use it for smoothies for my boys -- you can add healthy oil, whole plain yogurt and other hi-cal ingredients and it's easier to drink calories than eat them.

My DH, 32 next week, is 6ft and very thin. It disgusts me how he can pack away food, and I gain the weigh by looking at it! My five brothers are all over 6foot and were rails until they hit 30-- now they've got a bit around the middle, with long skinny legs.

My 16 yo ds is 6'2" and he says he weighs 150 lbs. He is thin, but has become quite muscular. And he can eat quite a lot.

the whey protein that some one else mentioned is my suggestion, lots of whole milk yogurt smmothies with that, lots of protein, peanut butter, any nut really, and lifting weights.
muscle weighs more than fat, (not that you son has any fat!! ) and when you are lifting it causes the body to store in a different way, thus you usually can gain weight.
(as opposed to all aerobic exercise which causes weight loss)
my ds is 6ft 1" and gained 18lb since Jan!!
his goal is 190!!!

I have the opposite problem - my 8 year old son is 5' tall and 100 pounds - he looks like a linebacker and has been recruited to play but we're gonna do soccer for at least 1 more season. I worry that my little man (who is almost taller than me) is gonna be too big despite all the exercise and play! So, I have nothing to offer but I wanted to say that....not to hijack the thread or anything....

I do want to say that I think while our kids are still gowing, there are some big swings that are going to naturally happen- either the height comes first and then the weight, or vs versa.
My 2nd son, Paul was quite "chubby", but then shot up 4 1/2 inches in just a 6 mo time, and only gained one lb!!
I think keeping them active, and eating lots of the right food (working food as opposed to empty calories) is going to help the larger child as well as the skinny one!
Maria- I've seen your ds- can I recruit him for a "front" on a youth rugby team??

Lisa,
I am right there with you. My 16 year old is 6 feet tall and weighs the same as your son. He eats like crazy. I assume he will gain, but we come from a family of thin people so there may be no hope. I find it difficult to shop for him because tall, thin people are rare. He needs a size 29 x 34 which is almost impossible to find around here.
