Another good title would have been "This ole gal just ain't what she used to be"!

I'm noticing the baby weight is not coming off as quickly as it has in the past. (I am in my early 30's, everyone warned me that this would happen eventually.) I seem to be having the biggest issues in the typical 'problem areas' such as my thighs and backside.   It also doesn't help that I am SUPER hungry all of the time, and I am always eating on the run type things. (not fast food like Wendy's etc... but easy to grab from the pantry food.)

Any suggestions for a busy mom of many. I'm not opposed to exercize, but I am opposed to going to a gym/etc... to get it. I thought I heard that Weight Watchers has a program for lactating women?

Lisa, please forgive me for laughing, but my baby weight does not come off until at least 12 months postpartum. As long as I am nursing (which I usually do until about 15 months or so) I retain some "baby fat" as I like to call it, and am definately on the voluptous side on top as well. (a "D" cup).
I have heard from many reputable Drs and Midwives that it takes 9 months to nurture the baby in the womb and it should take at least 9 months once the baby is "out" to get back to "regular" weight and shape
anyway, I always took comfort in that and it was that way for me...
I gained almost an even 40 lbs with each pregnancy, too, isn;t that interesting? I joke that it was one lb per week
Walking is about all I did first months postpartum, and with baby in sling it makes for a good weight bearing exercise in and of itself!

PS, I am with you about the gym issue- no time, no money for that! and, I am 36, so I had my babies roughly around when you are...
Maybe make a big bowl of a chock- full -of- interesting things -salad and snack on that when at home?? Hardboiled eggs added for protein, and or some shredded cheese?
For on the go- I love raw almonds and dried apricots- dosen't take up much space in the diaper bag- and really fills me up!

Lisa, About 9 months postpartum I am usually around 3 months pregnant! LOL!

I have gained 40+ lbs with each baby too. (42 w/MB) And each time before I've lost it all by 6 weeks. It's been nearly 8 weeks and I'm only about 15 pounds down!

OH MY!!! I have heard about moms like you!!! not to bring up breastfeeding again but I really think from what I've read that my slower to take the weight off/metabolism/whatever issue is what also kept my fertility from returning. My body "sensed" I was still "recovering", according to Dr Sears!

This must be quite a difference for you then. I hope you don't let it both you too much though, you seem to be a healthy sort of mom and I would just keep eating right and wearing that baby!

I have lost the weight before the next baby each time (though not made any headway on the excess from prior to the first baby)

but it varies how quickly I lose it... sometimes 6 weeks sometimes 6 months... as long as it's going I wouldn't change much.. for one thing.. restricting calories can slow weight loss if it's too low of calories for you.

If you're hungry all the time and running..
1) make sure you're drinking enough (and more) water.. sometimes we feel "hungry" when we should be thirsty.
2) slow down do try and eat slower at any rate.. I know when I'm in a hurry I tend to eat faster even if I'm in the car and going whereever.. eating faster doesn't help but the general "hurry hurry" feeling makes me eat faster.

Oh and I'm 37 and have lost the weight after baby #7.. so now either I'll wind up pregnany or I can start losing pre first pregnancy weight

I say eat WHATEVER you want (ask yourself, "what I am really craving right now?"). Then when you've established WHAT that is, eat in moderate quantities. Meaning no more than a fistful of food at a time. It's not what you eat, but how much. OF COURSE, we want to put good fuel (food) into our bodies, but you already eat healthy.   So I think the key is to SATISFY your body and your taste buds with whatever your body is craving, you won't overeat, and your body will use the extra fat for fuel.

AND....Eat ONLY when you're actually feeling those hunger pains...the slight tummy growling.

You shouldn't have to exercise to lose the weight....exercise is for something else....not nec losing weight.

I gain 40+ too, and by 8 weeks I'm usually only down about 15-25. After that, it will consistently come off at about 10 lbs/month. But, I hear ya'.....with my first 3, I didn't have that much time in between pregs and ended up not at a pre-preg weight before getting preg and 5 and 7 months.   But, oh well......it DID eventually come off.

Lisa~ I just re-read this. If you're SUPER hungry all the time, I'm wondering if you should just forget about the weight coming off right now.....give it another month....just eat! (as long as you really ARE hungry). Increase protein? Then, maybe in a month or so, pay more attention to quantity and see if you're still super hungry. 8 weeks is still early and nursing more than one, aren't you? and probably need the fuel. If you truly are super hungry, i'd pay attention to that for the next month or so. sorry...rambling.

This is really interesting. LisaR, was it you who said in the NFP and Breastfeeding thread that when we lie down to nurse our body thinks we are still recovering? I only have two kids so far, so I'm no expert, here. But, I realize in hindsight that after my son I dropped off all but fifteen pounds fairly quickly. The last fifteen pounds came off only when he started nursing less and my fertility returned about 12 months.

My daughter is almost 13 months now and I have had not even the faintest sign of a return of fertility (I've done "ecological breastfeeding" with both). This girl, for whatever reason, almost always demands to nurse lying down. Really, we can barely go out because she won't nurse out of the house--only in bed. I wonder if this has supressed my fertility? Also, I've been stuck with these last fifteen pounds of pregnancy weight despite having an even better diet and being even more active this time around. Maybe it's all related.

Lisbet, maybe your body just needs a bit more of a break this time before conceiving again. I would take all of the good advice already mentioned and not think about your weight as necessarily a sign of good or bad health.    I guess if you just start adding fifteen pounds with each baby from here on out that isn't so good! But maybe your body is just slowing down a bit all around. I don't at all mean to suggest that babies are ruining your health, though!

And, while I'm at it, can I just say that your example of generosity and openness to life has been tremendously encouraging to me--especially in the NFP and Breastfeeding thread (I couldn't decide whether to post this reply here or there).

Susan

This issue has taken another turn for me this morning. I had my 6 week pp vist with my midwives. (although I'm 8 weeks pp!) I have lost 16lbs., I am the heaviest I have ever been not pregnant, and it seems to be reflecting in my blood pressure. It was 130/80 both times we took it this morning. Sounds normal, but I have a consistant record of my bp over the past 10 years, and this is the first it has ever been over 110/60!! It's telling me that this is not a healthy weight for me. I am nursing two kids (as usual!) I really need to pay attention to what I eat and try to get some physical activity.

Susan, I hope I wasn't too passionate on the NFP/Breastfeeding thread. I had just taken a beating from my mother over the whole lotsa kids thing and I was feeling pretty raw from it.

yes, susan I'd say it is all related. have to run.
Lisa, my BP is VERY low, I can see how that would be an interesting change!

I think your passion in that thread was well-founded, Lisbet. I have to confess that normally, when I see families like yours, I think: "That can't be healthy. They must not be breastfeeding the "right" way." That thread was very educational for me. Your children are so beautiful and you seem so healthy (though I will keep this current health issue in my prayers for you). The whole thing was a real testament to me of generosity with regard to family size. I am an easily overwhelmed person and I often think, "I can't handle another baby so soon!"   If you could see my NFP charts for the conceptions of our two kids, you'd never believe that they could have been conceived when they were, so I think the Lord is trying to show me that I can handle more than I think I can.

Anyway, enough about me. I hope you can get this blood pressure issue resolved.

God Bless,

Susan

Here is our forum weight watchers thread which has fallen asleep. Weight Watchers does have a great nursing program which I have used many times. Although it takes me about a year to lose my weight, I generally make it to my wedding weight (my best weight) between pregnancies. WW has an online program too if that is easier. I like the meetings in person because I like the accountability. Some have been friendlier than others towards bringing my kids with me, but when I want to make it work, it does.

Another resource is the Lean But Not Mean blog that Cindy invited people to join. You post what and when you want. Many of us are from here. Leonie does great fitness video reviews for at-home workouts, and most of us share how we work food, exercise and "balance" into our regular homeschooling mother-of-many lifestyle although not all of us are homeschoolers or have lots of kids. I've found that having a place to record what I've done has helped me find the motivation to go do something! Just some ideas...

I had a big weight loss breakthrough this year! Body ph! I know it sounds simple but it was big for me. Since the new year I have lost ALL of my accumulated baby fat from my 5 pregnancies. I'm 37 and I've managed to get back to the weight I was after my 1st child (same weight, different body.) I wasn't sure it would ever happen. My "baby" is nearly 3 and there are none on the horizon at this time. Because my youngest is older I was able to be fairly strict with the Body Ecology Diet. But some of the body ph tips could benifit anyone - nursing or pregnant:
-fermented veggies
-probiotics
-apple cider vinegar
-food combinding (I think gasses make ammonia in the digestive track...)
-good digestion (food enzymes to better digest your fats and protiens)

Another thing worth looking into is making sure you are getting lots GOOD fats. You'll feel more satisfied and there is a connection between good fats and weight loss.

Are you drinking enough water? Any weights sitting around? Just a few minutes a day of simple weight lifting could give your metabolism a boost maybe?

I'm off to get my weights out!

One year ago, today (!) I had our 7th child. I am 5 feet tall, and I ended my pregancy at 170 lbs. At that point, I was really wondering if I would be able to carry another baby nine full months, since at that point,I was starting to suffer chronic back pain. I couldn't sit or lie down, as both were uncomfortable and standing was exhausting. I almost always lose my "pregnancy" weight very quickly, but at the end of last January, I still weighed nearly 150 lbs. I promised myself that I would work to lose weight with the start of Lent. I began getting up at 5:30am to walk for 45 minutes to an hour, and I very slowly started to lose weight. However, by May, with all of the walking, I was still only down 6 lbs. It was depressing. I knew Weight Watchers wouldn't work for me, because, first of all, I didn't have time to fit another meeting into my life, and secondly, I hate measuring. I am a very visual person, so with the support of my wonnderful husband, I purchased the Nutri-system diet. The food is fine, not great, but what it provided me was a visual of how much food I should actually be eating, and let me tell you, it was a LOT less than what I was consuming. All the same, I was never really hungry at the end of each day, because I spread out what I was eating and I started eating much more SLOWLY! Since the beginning of May, I have lost nearly 35 lbs. I am back to the size that I was in high school. I NEVER thought I would actually fit into a size 4 pair of pants ever again, but I do! When my kids asked me how much weight I lost, I tell them to pick up their 5 year old brother David! Seeing him and knowing that is the extra weight that I was carrying is an amazing visual reminder for me! The added benefit was that my husband began modifying his eating and has lost 18 lbs himself. Our grocery bill has dropped nearly $50/month as a result of our change in eating habits. We are eating much more healthfully as well. I have tons more energy and just plain feel better. Sorry for this long tome, but I really want to encourage you in your endeavor to lose weight. You really can do it!! My prayers will be with you! God Bless!

Lisa, I used to lose my baby weight within six weeks. I am fairly tall and normally a bit on the thin side. But when I reached my thirties, yep, it took quite a bit longer. The lactating seemed to keep the weight on even when I was tandem nursing.   I would usually see those last 15 pounds come off only after the toddler was weaned and the baby was no longer needing me for full sustenance.

Most recently, at 43, I had to make a concerted effort to lose the baby pounds when my nursing youngster was already three.   I probably COULD have lost it a bit earlier -- but the point is that it did take a bit more of an effort.

My suggestion is a food diary and regular weigh-ins. That is what worked for me.   Helped me pay attention to my habits, which were the problem -- grabbing food on the run -- kids' pb sandwich crusts, that type of thing! The other suggestion is to just be OK with a few extra pounds since you probably could use them while all the childbearing and other demands on your body are going on.

I wonder if youngish moms of many really NEED formal exercise programs -- I suspect you are always on the move anyway or doing weightlifting of babies and toddlers -- at least, it was like that for me.

I wondered about that too.....losing the weight in your twenties vs. your thirties.

But it wasn't impossible. Just took a bit more effort than it did when I was in my early years and could lose without much thought.

I think also, as you have more kids and have a busier life, it's harder to focus on your weight and maintenance than it is when you're younger.   Just so much else to think about.   That is what happened to me, anyway.

Jennie Lou,

I'd like to learn more about ph and weight loss! What does this look like fleshed out?

Two years ago, when I was 35, I was still nursing my youngest (she was 18 months at the time and nursing just once at night) my body went through some major hormonal shifts. In my last month of nursing, I got bad cases of mastitis twice and one of yeast. I've never had any of these issues in nursing my 3 other children. I went through bad PPD, (I know it was a little late, but that's the only explanation), and in one month I gained almost 15 pounds.

A little background, I'm almost 5'3" and have always been a size 4. I have clothes from high school still. I don't have a problem with portion size, I normally eat small amounts. But something happened to me that month. I have chronic fatigue which was not too bad at the time. But that month I felt terrible. I was only eating maybe 1 meal a day and I still gained 15 pounds. It's all fat. It's worse than when I had my twins. I'm in a size 8 now. I think my immune system pretty much collapsed and my adrenals got real slow. None of my bloodwork is abnormal though. Then after that, I got pregnant and had a miscarriage. So, I question hormones.

Maybe that doesn't sound like a big deal, but I have NO clothes! I keep buying just another pair of pants but after a while they don't fit anymore. Many times when I wear a skirt, my dh says it doesn't flatter me right now, or other people ask me if I'm pregnant. My shirts never seem to fit me well or cover me enough. I feel like I don't look good in anything.

I watch what I eat so closely. I eat small portions and try to eat every few hours (whether it's a salad or an apple) with protein. My chronic fatigue has flared this year with my dh's health issues. So, exercise has not happened consistently.

I tried to speed up my metabolism by drinking the juice of half a lemon in some water and 2 capsules of cayenne (a guy at the health food store said this worked for him) a couple times a day. Well, I made myself so sick! I think last night I had some type of detox experience because I woke up so warm and in sweats and spacey.

All this to say, HELP!!! How do I lose weight? I look at food and I gain it! I do want to except that I won't have the body I did at 20 (not that I was that thrilled with it then), and I want to age gracefully, but I'm just so unhappy with the way I look right now that I'm getting really self conscious about it.

Any tips would be appreciated!
