I am not ready for this. Are things happening already? My dd is 9(will be 10 April 7th) and she has physical symptoms and developments that definitely indicate the onset of puberty. I thought that I had more time. Does this mean that she could start her cycles soon? For her birthday we are going to a hotel for overnight and talk about what she should expect in maturing pysically, and then go to a spa the next day for her present. Do I need to have the talk sooner?
Please help, I am clueless..

Dear Darlene -
From this stage, you probably have at least several months, up to a year before she gets her first period. At least that has been my experience with 5 daughters. It is both an exciting and a kind of scary time, I think, for both you and your daughter. Your plans to celebrate her birthday sound lovely, very responsive to the young woman she is becoming.
Peace,
Nancy

My dd is the same age, and has the same issues. Generally cycles start about 2 years after the primary puberty development begins. I think you should be okay to wait for her birthday trip--that sounds like so much fun!

I just discussed this with the pediatrician. She said that the average is two years after "br**st buds" appear. I am so not ready for this, and I will be living it 2 at a time. Where did my babies go?!?

Darlene, My oldest, Kaleigh Elizabeth, showed signs about 9years physically. She was maturing so fast in her figure and height. She got her first cycle in the summer following her 5th grade. I know it is a scary thing to you your baby growing up!! Prayers for you!

My (very limited) experience so far has been very much like Snowbabiesmom's. No one ever prepared me, so I was terrified when my first cycle came - I prepared my dd as soon as I noticed things. It does happen so quick. We did a spa day too, and I plan on doing that with all of my daughters when the time comes.

Thank you for the help and advice. I told my dd that I was sad last night and she asked why to which I told her because she was growing up so fast. She said what I always tell her, "No matter how big you get you will always be my baby." Last night she even asked if she could sleep with us.(I said no.)

My daughter started in 3rd grade. She and I began having little conversations about it when she was seven. At seven, I was still helping her with bathtime and I noticed hair growth where I wasn't expecting any. The pediatrician said, one year from that. She was right. It was almost exactly one year from that moment.
I didn't want to scare her, and I also didn't think she would remember much if I gave it all to her in one dose at that age. I was in a panic, and I remember feeling that I just wanted to open the door to communication, to establish a pattern of we can talk about these things together whenever you want. So we would just have little conversations often.
She has done great with it. We still keep up the little conversations often, and she is so relaxed about it all.
I, on the other hand, had a harder time making the adjustment. I have tried to never burden her with my feelings about this, and the Lord has helped me to see that His timing is perfect. Just because her body is changing doesn't mean she isn't still a 4th grader (she is still just 9 and it has been a full year now). She still behaves in most ways like the little girl she is.

I have been through this with my five older daughters. Each one was different. By the time daughter #3 was ready for our special talk, she told me daughter #2 had already explained it to her! At first I was a bit upset, but then I realized it was a great sister moment and actually made things easier for both of us. And we still had our talk. The girls have all supported each other through all of this and the emotional ups and downs that go with it. I am so glad they have each other.

Can anyone recommend a book that DD (10 in September) and I can read together that will help to explain all the changes she's going through? There's nothing physical yet, but she is starting to get more emotional and get angry and cry more easily. Is that the hormones starting to work?
Thanks!
Jennifer

Ladies,
I wanted to bump this thread because my daughter complained about her br**sts itching yesterday. Could that be stretching like our bellies when we are pregnant? Is that a symptom that any of your girls had? This is my oldest DD and she turns 9 in 3 days.
TIA!

Some of the itching is from the sebaceous glands "activating". My just 10 yo dd has little pimply bumps that itch and I was told that was normal.

My daughter started having adult BO at 8 years of age. Totally freaked me out. I took her to the doctor and everything. She told me this is how some girls start, and while 8yo was early, if that was the only symptom it was ok. I was so scared she would start her period soon, but she didn't. She was around 10 when she started developing in other areas, and she just started her period three months ago. She will be 13 in September. So, just our experience. :)
