Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My 14 yo wants to study home economics. This of course struck fear into my heart because I am a can-barely-sew-on-a-button person who is only adequate in the kitchen. So have you all used any home economics courses? I need something planned out. Actually, I was going to sign her up for sewing lessons this summer anyway. But what about all the other stuff? I looked through the Rainbow Resource catalog. I am a little nervous about some of the programs as they seem very fundamentalist, like Far Above Rubies and Keepers of their homes. The Christian Lightunits one looked appealing.

So what's your advice?

Thanks,

Faith

I too am looking into Home Ec for my soon-to-be 14yod. Recommendations I got on other lists included "Home Life Skills" -- Home Life Skills -- and using the book Home Comforts: The Art and Science of Keeping House.

Both look great. Also, there is the "Sewing with St. Anne" from CHC for sewing.

Hope this helps a bit.

Blessings

Hi Mary,

The Home Life Skills looks very good! I think I might give it a whirl.

Thanks so much.

Blessings,

Faith

Mary G, I have to tell you something very funny! This past week I was for the first time in my married life, trying to do a traditional spring cleaning. Well, I didn't go as deep in my cleaning as I had hoped but I did declutter a ton. Anyway, I was cleaning away clutter that was way up on top of our breakfront in the dining room, a very big piece of furniture and I even got up on a chair to make sure I had gotten everything off it and lo and behold shoved in the back and covered with dust was the very book you mentioned, Home Comforts! Then I remembered where I had heard of it before (it sounded familiar to me when you mentioned it)! My sister-in-law had given it to me for Christmas about 3 years ago! Isn't that a hoot! My sister in law is a very home economics type person. I mean she sews and cross-stitches and gardens and re-decorates regularly etc, etc. And she got me this book probably in deep compassion for my almost total lack of housekeeping skills and there it sat on the breakfront covered in dust for three years!!! Good thing she never asked me about it!

Anyway, I started reading it and it is quite interesting! But I have a little distrust of the author because I don't think she has a clue about large family management, but still she is an extremely good writer and it is chock full of good advice and little helpful nuggest of info. It is quite a cozy read!

Anyway, I am still chuckling about it and looking forward to reading it before bed tonight. It is quite a weighty tome!

Faith:

I know this feeling of spring cleaning -- to me it means decluttering, to my dh it means S-P-R-I-N-G   C-L-E-A-N-I-N-G! I mean he gets into it -- unfortunately, I'm not THAT worried about a smudge on the window or a spot on the floor. The poor guy!

When I checked out Home Comforts, he thought it was JUST what I needed. I told him it was for our daughter's home ec and he said maybe that was the problem -- I went to a Catholic, college prep high school where we didn't even have home ec -- so I'm highly educated, but low on the whole home ec scene

Blessings and have fun with HC!
