Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Anyone have a U.S history spine they liked? I really would like one thats not so huge (most are like 1,300 pages!).

Also, did you try to do ALL US history? I am thinking maybe do from civil war to present. Anytime dd had US history we always start with early history - and therefore never really got to anything in 20 or 21 century!

Have you looked at Lands of Hope and Promise as a possible spine?
Right now, it's in PDF form, but I have heard that they have found a new publisher for the hardcover version.

I'm doing up to the 20th century this year, saving 20th-contemporary history for 12th grade.

We are using Paul Johnson's History of the American people, but not the whole book this year.

I use the REA CLEP guides as spines/outlines. They are inexpensive and brief. Which is all I really need to get going. I have shelves of encyclopedias and such. And I already own some textbooks... Light to Nations, Usborne, Kolbe lessons and books for iirc 12th grade....

I know it might sound babyish, but you can use the 2semester LPH US History course for a spine even tho its for younger kids. The thing i like about that is it forces you to motor thru all the history and not get hung up anywhere. (Of course, this is only good if u r looking for an overview o US history-you could obviously do an in-depth study for years on specific eras of US history, if you are not careful)

OK to add more "meat" to it for for highschoolers, you can easily supplement w readings from something sophisticated like Paul Johnson's book, primary documents or any of an abundance of living history books pertinant to each period (eg the reading guide, Let the Authors Speak by Carolyn Hatcher lists books according to appropriate age group and historical period if I remember correctly.

Also, I mention this as a sidebar but it could be very useful to homeschooled highschoolers, but Hillsdale College offers a FREE online course on the US constitution that looks excellent. I have been doing their Great Books course and so far it is first rate. The Constitution Course is supposed to be their piece de resistance! It is also archived so u can start any time and finish according to your schedule. I am considering this for my rising 10th grader as an addendum to her US History overview.
