I would love to hear what method you use to teach the research paper.

My oldest did her high school research papers using the traditional index card method. (as used in WTM, Kolbe, Seton etc)

My twins used IEW for middle school and used the IEW "Super Essay" method.

I used to think I preferred the IEW method, but now as my 9th graders are preparing to write their 9th Grade research paper, I am thinking that they might be better with the index card method.

Thanks for sharing any ideas.

I teach my boys to write essays using a simple outline format. I collaborate with them via Google docs that we share until they can do it themselves. This method isn't for everyone because it is labor intensive, but for those who like to teach writing, it is super efficient and effective.

Angie - this is what the guys did for 7th and 8th - they did a "super outline". I was just wondering if this might be less organized and efficient when using more sources and with more depth to their research paper?

We've used the old notecard method. I like it because you can spread out and categorize your information physically -- pile cards in categories, order them, think about what you'd say about them/to connect them . . . I just find the physicality of it very useful and helpful.

For my money, THE hardest thing about teaching or writing a research paper is figuring out how to use your written voice to manage and interpret all the voices of the various outside sources. For a teenaged writer, it's just so easy to be led around by the nose by all those seemingly more authoritative voices, rather than letting your own argument and thought process guide everything.

I haven't done this, and in fact have only just now thought of it, but an interesting exercise would be to spread out and categorize all the notecards, then write some more cards with sentences about why A is important, how A relates to B, what C is really saying, and so on. In other words, script some transitions into and out of those source quotations and some connections between them, to lay out on the floor with the source cards, in the order in which that information might appear in a paragraph or section.

Anyway, I have to do something physical like that before I can write an outline . . . :)
