So, DD (10th grade) and I get really tired of her being asked what she wants to major in. That gets followed up by the "where do you want to go to college" question. She has no clue for either. I am fine with that! I mean do kids in 10th grade REALLY know what they want to major in and go to school. Seems those that do are the minority. But wonder how to reassure dd more that it is perfectly normal not to know the answers to these questions. In face - I think it is the better way to go - keep an open mind about both issues, let God led and you will eventually find the answers to both. And the answer to major may not be until AFTER you are IN college!

Anyone else relate to this!

Oh definitely, btdt. I think the best thing is simply to come up with a graceful answer to the question. In our experience people aren't trying to put someone on the spot so much as just truly interested and want to encourage them. So come up with an answer that let's her communicate that she's still exploring her options and leave it at that. Or turn it back on the person and ask where did they go to college? did they like it? what was their major? Like she's doing research

Yes, I think she can just smile and say something like, "Oh, I'm keeping an open mind right now," or, "I'm just waiting to see what God wants me to do."

People say these things, I think, just as a way of making conversation, because they don't know what to say to teenagers or children in general -- it's the high-school equivalent of, "Oh, you're homeschooled? What's the reciprocal of pi, then?"

I love Jodie's suggestion of turning it back to the person, to make it a real conversation. She might find out some really interesting things that way!

My son (15) will just say something like, well right now I'm interested in X, Y & Z. But I don't know what I'm going to do right now. I still have time.

You're not alone. It's a tough question to ask a teen who is still trying to find themselves.
