Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Ok, the baby is now almost 4 months old, and I am trying to get back on track. My oldest is a rising junior and I am trying to get together a transcript for him. The problem I'm having is that there are subjects we do nontraditionally and subjects we do as a regular courses. How important is it to date courses on the transcript? And how do you show those courses in progress? If I try to do it by year his 9th grade looks ok, but his 10th grade (this past year) is a mess.

For example: he did some standard biology, but not enough to grant a half credit (I don't think, but he might have not told me everything he was reading. Sigh.) We've sort of figured out that the best way for him to do biology is to just let him read and watch on his own instead of trying a standard course, but that will mean we're collecting experiences right through senior year. Ditto for American History. And then his English this year was mostly dedicated to novel-writing... except that he did read or listen to a few books, write a few papers, and watch a few video adaptations/performances... not enough (again) for a full credit, but probably enough for a half credit... I thought I could call it "19th Century Authors", but then there is a bit of Jane Austen and Shakespeare. (Then again, Shakespeare shows up in a little or big ways every year, so I could gather all the Shakespeare together... only he'll be taking an actual co-op class dedicated to Shakespeare this year and I don't want to lump everything into that because it doesn't belong there.)

Argh. I'm not having this much trouble with my draft of a narrative transcript, of course, since that format works so much better for these sorts of non-traditional "courses", but the summary transcript is driving me a little batty. It would definitely be much easier to do one by subject alone, but everywhere I look it seems as if colleges want dates?
