This is the 1st book in the Didache Series. I now see that there is a 2nd edition. The book itself is not to bad if I was going to buy new but the teacher manual is crazy in price.
Can anyone tell me more on why I would want the new 2nd edition vs. just buying a used and more reasonably priced 1st edition book. Thanks Misty

I have it - I have to look which edition later. I do have to teachers edition - I don't use it much. The 1st time I used the book - I read the chapters before my son did. Then i rarely used the manual. This year with dd - I find I don't want to re-read the text but don't remember enough from ds (4 years ago) so I read the summaries the teachers has. Also, I do use the tests from the manual.

We have not used the TM - they're expensive. I have assigned my own work and made my own tests.

We haven't used the TM, either, but love the series.

So the series is a must.
The TM is good for tests, and summaries? Does that sound about right? I don't know if I would have time to pre-read this book so I may need the TM to read these summaries.
I am not so interested in testing on this if they can and will be doing written narrations and we can talk orally about it.

There are vocab lists and review questions in each chapter, too.

I am pretty sure I have the first edition, and there are study questions within the student book.

I forget which edition I have, and it also has study questions. Our MO is for the student to read the chapter, do the study questions (I always push for a reading journal/narration thing, but they want to do the study questions), and then we talk about it. I don't give tests, do formal vocab, etc. I essentially view reading like this as a supplement to living learning, ie practicing the faith daily via Mass, prayers, Adoration, etc. That's the real catechesis -- everything else is a gloss.
Of the overall-excellent series (yes, a must for high school), both my kids who have used the books so far agree that Understanding the Scriptures is the best, in the sense that they really learned/are learning (9th grader is using it this year) a lot that they didn't already know. In fact, I'm skipping Intro to Cath for my current student, because looking through it with him, we both felt that it was repetition of information he'd been learning for years, albeit very well presented. He'd done an intensive study of the catechism last year, plus been through the Confirmation class in our parish (taught by our priest and very good), so this seemed like overkill right after that. On the other hand, it seemed like an excellent time to focus on the Bible.
My college girl did Our Moral Life in Christ her senior year and found it kind of a letdown, for reasons I now can't remember -- I'll have to ask her. I just remember that, coming off Understanding the Scriptures in 11th, she had been very excited about the next one, and then it didn't take the top of her head off. Possibly this is just personal idiosyncrasy (and she's very idiosyncratic in her likes and dislikes), but again, I'll ask her why she didn't love it so much.
On the other hand, she took Understanding the Bible at UD last spring, and kept remarking that she'd learned WAY more about the Bible from the Understanding the Scriptures text in high school.
Overall, though, the series is a great resource for high school. As a new Catholic just as my first was entering high school, I was really glad to have it recommended to me.
