Not Art History or Art Appreciation. But Art. Like picking up a brush and making a picture.
What should be included in such a class?
I know I can teach some of the real basics and I have my sister as backup (already asked her to take my oldest for an hour of art once a week). So I'm sure we can manage a first year art class at the high school level.
But what to include  that's the question.

Well, you might want to include things like:
Keeping a weekly sketchbook (2 - 3 sketches per week)
Color theory
Charcoal drawings
Pastels
Watercolor painting
Pen and ink drawing
3D design (this could be clay/ceramics or sculpture)
Bookbinding or jewelry-making
A final project
(Yes, I took 9th-grade art...and this is pretty much what we did. You could add in calligraphy if your student is interested.)

Hi,
I'm not sure if this helps, but Artistic Pursuits is an excellent program designed so older children can teach themselves. It has books for all levels including HS. I have never used it at the HS level...Yet.(Next year) but the lower levels are easy to use.

thanks Nancy.. yes that does help.. I took an art class.. but moved midway through the class.. and the class I finished up in was nothing like the class I'd started to take and it's a good thing that I had some clue what I was doing for drawing because there was little teaching happening by the time I got there.. just.. here's the assignment, start work.

The big deal part of my class was the three sketches per week we had to turn in each quarter...it's harder than it sounds. Sketches had to be drawn from real life (objects, landscapes or people). Great training.

Seconding Jennifer's recommendation of Artistic Pursuits for High School. Sarah is finishing the second half of Book 1 for high school this year (her 10th grade year) and really enjoys it. In the upper elementary on up books, it works very well as an independent course, yet it's easy to observe, step in, be involved if I want to be and have time/ability, but it's not necessary so a student can move at a regular pace independent of me and simply share with me their progress or project. I have seen some real deepening and fine tuning of Sarah's artistic skills, expression and understanding as she moves through this high school book.
The program works so well because it develops a breadth of artistic understanding in age appropriate ways: in learning the technical vocabulary of art, inviting observation and detail building skills, skills for learning to look at art, a little bit of art history, and then the application of artistic skills. It's truly a well-rounded, complete program and I'd have to say that it's one of the favorites on my shelf. Another thing I really like is that it's easy to combine fairly close age groups in this program; in other words, you could probably combine at least a few of your older kids into the same high school book, Jodie, and it would work well. That certainly stretches the use of the one book, too!
I can't remember when the sale is, Jodie, but I ONLY buy the program when it goes on sale!! I *think* it's a buy 2 books, get the 3rd book free kind of sale - Mary, Suzanne, anyone ?? can you help me remember? It's an expensive program/book, but I've been using it for a few years now and it works great with all my kids, all ages! It's non-consumable, so the same book will work well with all your kids, you'll simply need to resupply art stock as needed. That's an important consideration in the investment in the program, and makes the initial investment in the book worthwhile for us.
I notice that Artistic Pursuits now offers *art packs* for each of their books. They used to simply link to Dick Blick who specially bundled the supplies needed for each of Artistic Pursuit's books, and I really liked that because I could add the entire book-specific bundle to my cart and then simply remove those few items from the bundle that we already owned from my cart. That was much easier than hunting down individual supplies, but I haven't used this new feature yet of purchasing art packs directly from Artistic Pursuits though.
Another option I thought I'd mention are the free high school art lesson plans offered at Dick Blick. I like supplementing with these lessons sometimes, but I prefer a more cohesive program like Artistic Pursuits for overall art, and I find that each of my kids, no matter their learning style, really enjoys this program.

Thanks Jen.. that helps. I'm thinking dd14 is wanting something a bit "special", seperate for high school and getting to go to Auntie's house an hour a week to do art will be just the ticket, whether we use this program or wing it.
DD14 knows that it is possible to pick and choose and take classes at the public school here. But from those who've done it.. it's not worth it. It just sounds so exciting to have other friends talking about this new thing (high school) that she wants to join in and get that too. The teacher's are mostly good from what I understand.. but the crowd control leaves a great deal to be desired, so kids that want to go to school to learn, lose out.
The program is a bit tricky because I need to get TT Algebra 1 as well.. so a lot will depend on what our income looks like this summer/fall.

Know what you mean! I wrote to Brenda Ellis just now asking if there would be an Artistic Pursuits sale any time soon. I'll report back if I hear back from her. I'm signed up for email newsletters, but for some reason I don't get my email subscriptions from Artistic Pursuits and Homeschool Co-op - irritating!!!  Anyway, if you consider the program a possibility, perhaps it could be a purchase that is staggered to assist your budgeting (??) - purchased later in the fall. Could you start your dd off with your sister and a couple of basic (free) lessons, and then purchase the program a little later? Just throwing out ideas - you'll need to look at the program closely first anyway to see if the ideas/philosophy/applications would appeal to y'all.

oh and since I was checking prices.. the art pack senior hs 1 was $44 w/ $8 shipping at dick blick and the other pack was $57 + $11 shipping
yes staggering it might work.. but dh's job CAN get a lot of OT. So it's really a wait and see and by about Oct. we have a better idea where we are. And yes I'd love to hear about a sale, thanks.
