Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

For those of you who have homeschooled through high school, can you ask your graduates a few questions?

What worked? - the pros, benefits, likes

What didn't? - the cons, costs, dislikes

How did being home educated during the high school years help to prepare you uniquely for life as an adult?

I plan to ask my dd these questions and will post her reply. I'm hoping to glean ideas from her as I plan for her brother. Let me know if I can post anonymously for you to keep you young adult's confidentiality.

Thanks!

Love,

Here are my dd's thoughts:

Quote:

What Worked:
-Being able to grow in independence by chosing course material and courses.
-Developing specialties in certain niche subjects (Thomas Jefferson, Baseball, Gilbert and Sullivan, English Lit of the 17-18th centuries)
-Having a flexible schedule
-Having friends in the area that also homeschooled
-Being involved in activities not specifically run by homeschoolers (I took karate at our local rec center and developed friendships with those in my class)
-Delegating classes later in the high school years (after my sophomore year I started taking General Ed. classes at a local community college. This was a big help in increasing my confidence in subjects I didn't love/wasn't strong in and saved me money and time)
-Reading a lot for all my classes

What Didn't Work
-Not enough accountability for classes I didn't like
-I didn't stick to a certain record keeping routine which caused confusion
-I got too emotionally upset about classes I didn't like or wasn't strong in; I would tend to think "I'm can't do this math lesson - I'm never going to graduate high school!" instead of "It's just math, not a scary monster. Do it to your best ability and then ask for help."

How homeschooling prepared me uniquely for post HS life
-I have a better sense of taking initiative and managing my time compared to my peers
-I generally enjoy classes more than my peers (or at least am better at faking it)
-I'm respectful to my professors and show that I'm working hard

If I had to give advice to those who are homeschooling for high school now....
-Just do it. Don't avoid subjects you dislike or aren't comfortable with as that will lead to self doubt and worry.
-Find ways to make the subject yours. For example if you're a film buff find movies to watch for each class. When you find some way to enjoy a subject, you will remember it better.
-Do not be afraid to ask for help.

I hope others chime in!

Love,

I think this is a great idea. We recently had a mom's support group gathering on this topic. Several young graduates were asked to come and speak to us and we basically covered the types of questions you had listed here. It was very informative. I wish I could contribute. Having not homeschooled through high school with my older sons, I don't have their experience to add. Now that we are doing high school at home, eventually we will have something to add, but for now I'm gleening. Thanks.
