Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I spent a little time looking at college requirements and I'm wondering if I am hurting things by having my sons do Algebra for example in the 7th grade. While they are ready for it, I'm not sure if I should save it to report on their transcripts...or would you write on their transcripts...Algebra 7th grade, and whatever else each consecutive year so the college knows that they had all the maths.

It's pretty common where I live for 8th graders to do Algebra I, and I know many 7th graders taking Algebra I as well. I'm guessing most colleges will see a high school transcript that reads Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-calculus, Calculus and simply assume that Algebra I happened prior to high school.

As I am finishing up dd's high school transcript for her admission to the homeschool honor society, I just had this issue come up. In our state, Algebra I taken in middle school for high school credit does count as one of the four required courses for math needed for high school graduation. I imagine that is the case for most states. I just added a small section prior to her freshman year and included Algebra I (and Physical Science) as credits towards graduation.

Adding to what Jennifer said (in Texas, which is where I live too): A high school class taken in 8th grade will count towards high school graduation, but 3 math credits still have to be taken "in high school" and 7th grade work doesn't count. So if your boys took Algebra in 7th and Geometry (or alg 2) in 8th, they'd still need 3 additional maths in high school (to have 4 total). Here some kids take Algebra and Geometry the same year in high school. Another thought: Who says 8th grade needs to be one year long when you're homeschooling?

If your son is ready for it, why would you hold him back?   Even if it won't be counted as a high school credit, will that really matter?   If he's ready for algebra, then he's probably good in math and will continue to take more advanced classes in high school; the concern about 4 math credits won't be an issue.

We did algebra early because that was the next book in the Saxon series.   It wasn't any conscious decision on my part, it's just the way it worked out.   I didn't push her, but I definitely didn't hold her back. I did add in a separate geometry course to slow her down for a year, but as challenging as that was, I'm glad she did that.   What I didn't know then, and am finding out now, is what an advantage this has when looking at high school sciences.   So many of them require the completion of algebra 1 or 2 or pre-calculus.   The earlier the student completes these prerequisites, the more options they have when choosing science classes.

If your son has his pre-algebra down pat, IMO there's no reason not to move forward.

Thanks for all of your input. That is what I felt too...that as long as he was ready why not go ahead? This year he really wants to learn Accounting and so we are doing that while reviewing Algebra with this book algebra to keep it fresh for when he does Algebra II next year. Of course because of his love of Math we'll be doing some each year. So, it sounds like it doesn't matter so much what the 4 HS Math classes are, just that they had 4, right?

I took Algebra in 7th grade in the public school system - I just ended up taking all the math courses that the high school offered and could have taken math courses at the local community college my senior year if I wanted to (I could have graduated early too, but I chose not to).

As another person stated in different words, unless you need to "prove" your timeline for middle school years - you can "start" high school whenever you want - even if that's just taking high school math early. (this is different if you're under an umbrella school too) Just track everything he does and go back as far as you need when he's actually applying to schools. If he's doing algebra now, he'll be just fine for college - the only thing they are really concerned about it is if he takes a year or more off of math before starting college - that might put him a bit behind.

My son is young - but he essentially has finished 3 school years in one year. Our state just requires a certain number of days of schooling each year - no subject requirements. We'll look at college admissions down the road, when we're looking to see assure he's doing the right stuff to get into the schools he considers (if he does consider any).
