This will be the first year we are considering Latin for high school.
Does anyone have experience with Homeschool Connections, or Memoria Press Online Academy?
MP is very pricey and I don't think we can do that route for that reason, and HC their times are not beffiting of our schedule.
Since I don't know Latin or even how to teach it I need recommendations.
What has worked for your children?
What have you used?
I realy don't want this to be too painful of a experience

I was hoping someone who's already done Latin would be able to help you out. We'll be starting Henle Latin I this year, so I can't give you any BTDT experience.

I don't know how the costs compare with the others you mentioned, but it might be worth looking into.

cheap...easy...effective... pick any two, you can't have all three.
On line Latin courses aren't cheap... but they are usually effective and easier for a mom who doesn't feel certain of her Latin skills.
Doing it yourself at home is cheaper, and might be as effective if you are really disciplines, but probably not easy.
Those are the choices we have to make. For the record, I lIKE the on-line Latin courses with an enthusiastic, knowledgeable teacher who can interact with the students and check their comprehension. But, yes, it costs.

Maybe I should have worded my post more cost friendly...I realize that I can't have all three. After researching this for a few days after I posted I knew that this was not going to be cheap. That is why I asked for suggestions. I don't want to end up paying a lot of money for a course that isn't suitable and expensive to boot.
If we do go down the online route, I am not aware of all the options there are. I don't know of the knowledgeable teachers to feel comfortable yet.
I will look into Seton, thank you.

It sort of depends on what your end-goal in learning Latin is, as well. Classical Liberal Arts Academy offers the self-paced online Grammar I course (Grammar II coming in Fall 2010) for $125.

My 12yo daughter is on lesson 6 of 40 and it is challenging but very satisfying for her when she completes an exam. All the exams and quizzes are online. There is memory work to be done with each lesson and writing exercises for some lessons.
We had planned to do Henle after she'd finished Latina Christiana I and II, but chose this one instead. It uses a combination of memorizing the first chapter of the Gospel of John in Latin with learning the usual parts of speech, grammar rules and so on. The class teaches the student both classical and ecclesiastical Latin. The 2nd year class, Grammar II, will introduce Greek as well.
For Student Support, the parent or student can IM the owner of the school, Mr. Michael, or one of the support staff members. You can also email or call the school with questions.
--Regarding cost, I should add, that CLAA will allow you to pay in installments. So one $125 course can be spread out over up to 10 months; $12.50 a month. I think that's the best deal you'll find out there. :)

We tried MP last year. For us it was a disaster. (ended up dropping out) Your child must be able to spell all of the Latin words correctly because the online tests count it wrong if it is misspelled. My ds can't spell english words well let alone Latin. IF your dc can spell well, this shouldn't be a problem.

I have a dd, 15, who loves classical languages. She took LC I and LC II (after we did Prima Latina on our own) with Memoria Press online. She liked them both. They have a good program.
The chats were very helpful for her when she did LC I but she got tired of them in LC II (though since we had paid for the service, I made her do them). You have the option of just signing up for the course with or without the chat option.
I just looked and my dd just finished the Henle I book (she did the first half with Memoria Press but last year did it on her own--her choice). There is a big price difference in the course I would choose for her--High School Latin III. I about died at the price difference...it is $449 for the full course (both semesters) vs. $100 for the independent study course (full course with syllabus, online quizzes, tests, online report card and q&a forum--just no chat). So, Memoria Press is a decent option without the chat feature.
We have been interested in the Homeschool Connections Latin courses, too. We have had a very good experience with two other courses (Govt. and Literature) but they don't use Henle and dd wants to continue with that text.
LeAnn, the CLAA sounds very good, too. My dd is studying Greek on her own and would have loved to learn both languages together but we are too far down our path to change.

Carmenta
and Seton Latin.
We are doing Kolbe 9th grade this year and we wanted extra help with it. I am really tempted to go through Henle, but I also like HC just their early time is  not very fun. I know that that sounds so petty, I jut know my house.

My daughter LOVED Alecia Rollings as a Latin teacher through Homeschool Connections and their summer Latin Camp II. Here's our post about our experience.
She did LC I & LC II and I was interested in Memoria Press' Henle I online class when Homeschool Connections offered this one. I've been impressed how much Dd learned in 12 sessions over the summer and she went from tolerating Latin to LOVING Latin! I e-mailed Alecia 10,000 questions before going with HC. She was really helpful in answering allllll my questions.
In particular, I was concerned about being able to jump back into Henle if the HC class wasn't her cup of tea and was satisfied with Alecia's answers. Basically, you always loose something when going from one program to another, but she has specific items the student will learn in her class from year to year and it seemed to transfer well into what level she'd be in with an existing program.
I'd be happy to answer any specific questions...

We have used Lone Pine Classical for a few years and have been very, very pleased with every aspect of it. Dd knows her Latin inside and out despite my inability to go beyond LCII. Well worth the money. Before that we tried Regina Caeli one year and that was not a good experience. There was no support outside of class and the teacher was sarcastic when questions were asked that she thought were obvious. It was recommended by a cyber-friend who loved RC, but I believe she was able to help her child with advanced Latin. No me (blush).
Before RC (we've been at this a long time) we tried Seton's Latin 1. That dc needed more input than what was available at that time. For year 3 it looks like we'll be fully enrolling in Seton 11 and use their Latin 3 course. The challenging year seems to be Latin 2. Once they have a good handle on the grammar (typically after Latin 2) they can move to a more independent program. Our plan was to pay for two years of intensive Latin with one child who would then teach the next child and so on down the line. It is working out that way. Homeschool Connections was not around when we started using Lone Pine, but I would give that serious consideration if I was starting over. The students in the class become familiar with each other and our dd always wished that there were more Catholics in the group. I believe there was only one other Catholic homeschooler at her level.

I'd just like to add one tidbit to what has been said so far. If you can't make the dates and times for the live classes, we do have another option. We have a Subscription Service that gives you access to past courses 24/7. You don't have the interaction with the teacher as you do with the live classes, but it is far more economical and lets you learn at your own pace.
With the Subscription, you get the all of recorded classes and support materials (tests, answer keys, etc.). It's only $1 for the first 7 days if you want to give it a try. After that it's $30 per month and that gives you access to courses from Latin to theology to literature and more.
I hope this is helpful.

My daughter is just wrapping up Latin Bootcamp with Alecia Rollings through Homeschool Connections. We were a bit weak on Latin around here and she needs to get up to speed with her cohorts in the HEP she is enrolled in next year. I am simply AMAZED at how much she has learned. It's not a cakewalk for her, but she is really enjoying the challenge and learning a lot. The Latin tutor at the HEP highly recommended the Boot Camp. The Boot Camp is through the Sub. service, and it's really cool.

Claudia, I'm afraid I owe you and all of our west coast families an apology on the Latin I classes. I'm sorry!!! Yes, I can see where 6:30 AM may not be possible! I bet you can guess our Latin teacher is on the east coast. We'll definitely fix this next school year. I know of a couple of west coast families who are planning on doing the recorded course for this year.
I was thinking about adding a second Latin I course later in the day but I'm worried that it may be too close to the beginning of the school year already. If I could find 10 students willing to commit, I can ask the teacher to do a second course. She may be available at 11:00 AM Eastern on Thursdays. But 8:00 AM is still awful early.
Note that the Latin II and III courses are at 11 AM Eastern.
Lisa, I'm so glad that the Boot Camp worked out for your family! There's a Boot Camp II also if you want to keep going. Will your children have Miss Cican for Latin? She is wonderful! My son went from a D to A under her tutelage. We'll see you at St. A's!!!

My dd has been doing Henle Latin I through Seton for a week and a half now, so speaking from experience I can report that it's one of her favorite courses.  I can also report that I remember almost nothing about Latin from my high school days.

The Latin I and II courses from this summer are currently available. There are 8 classes for the Latin I Boot Camp and 12 classes for the Latin II Boot Camp. Both could be used for fall classes.
The fall Latin courses will be available as recordings after they finish in December.
If anyone is interested in Latin III (live) for the fall please let me know right away. It's our only class in danger of being canceled due to low enrollment. I won't cancel if parents let me know they are planning on enrolling yet. (Though we wouldn't cancel it all together but instead combine it with Latin II.)
