Deleted my post, as moderators didn't like it. Guess this isn't the place to state opinions about certain curriculum providers.

It's OK to forget Seton grades and just do your own .
I think the key is to find a way to feel comfortable and not burdened by doing it yourself. For some families, mom is able, willing, and enjoys providing writing instruction and grading herself. Sometimes mom wants other eyes on the papers and finds ways to get help with some feedback. Sometimes mom completely delegates the class/topic, but does so with someone she feels that she can work with well.
For my first child, I did most of the writing instruction informally her early high school years. I also had her work with a local writer (published) & educator (specializing with home schooling students.) Then, she went to the local community college to test into English 101. I'll most likely do the same with my second child, except I'll skip the local teacher. He's retiring AND I've found that I LOVE this part of high school instruction.
It sounds like Seton, which may be a perfect for fit for some families, isn't a good fit for yours. That's OK! Here's praying that you find a great fit!
Love,

Barb, I think Angie is offering good, road-tested advice. We have not used a grading service from anywhere, but I can easily imagine your frustration. It sounds, from what you've written, that you are ready to write the Seton experience off as a learning experience for you...and that you feel much more confident about your child's abilities AND your own assessment competence. That's all good.
It's not terrible to go through this now, as your children will definitely run across this in college, too. (I just spent time today telling my son that if Professor X thinks President Y was great, and my son disagrees, he'd better be ready to write the world's greatest essay on "Yes, but..." and that president. Some evaluators have their way, despite the 8-lane highway within plain sight.) (I have a PoliSci story about that, with a power politics professor and a Marxist TA...) This learning experience, while frustrating, will have future value, I think.
I am happy that you are feeling more confident about your ability to grade your son's work. You are best placed to see improvement in all areas!
Every year of homeschooling is its own balancing act, I've found. I think you're hitting your stride at a very important time for your ds, and that's all good.

Barb, hopefully there has been a misunderstanding here. 4Real has gone through a time of refocus as of late. I hope you can see that our goal is to support you in your homeschooling efforts while we, as a public board, avoid some tricky pitfalls. We need to be careful about how we discuss others, to include curriculum providers, so that we do not cause detraction while also being aware that they aren't here to present their side of the story. We encourage all who use a curriculum provider, to go directly to that provider with questions and concerns. Here is a link to our policies and guidelines which may be a help to understanding our goal for this topic.
From our homepage:
Quote:
We support families who design their own course of home studies, be it in whole or part. ...4Real hopes to continue its ministry emphasizing 'Living Learning' discussions that are rich in ideas, gratifying, inspiring, and encourage creativity. This do-it-yourself desire will be further supported by 'Home as Haven' chats. |

I understand that a moderator has contacted you through Private Message, asking you to consider making minor changes to your original post to reflect the above. We're trying to help keep the focus on what we do best...support you in your decision to do-it-yourself or delegate writing instruction and grading differently. In this sense, the issue we can best address isn't about Seton but rather about a decision to find alternative ways to meet writing requirements for high school.
I hope this helps with any misunderstandings and hope there is a way to re-post your topic in a way that both you and moderators can feel right about. I appreciate that you contribute to this board, in particular to the High School Years forum.
Love,
