Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm just wondering why all of you seem to go through the trouble of transcripts, requirements, and all the other state testing when all that is required is a GED? Please excuse my ignorance in this...

i don't think you are eligible for scholarships for college in the same way if you get a GED.

i'm not positive about that, but that is my guess.

There's also a stigma attached to a GED.. "that's what kids get that didn't finish school" and that's not what a homeschooler is doing.. they did finish school etc.

But much depends on the state.. I know a friend in ND which has heavy oversight of homeschooling.. and she was counting the days her kids would be old enough to take the GED at 16, I think, so that they could go on with their schooling without someone peeking over their shoulders constantly.

But other states don't allow taking the GED until you're over 18 anyway.

While many colleges will accept the GED for admission (and general need-based financial aid), there are various factors that would would make it advantageous for colleges/universities to have more detailed course of study information. Scholarships have been mentioned, another is admission to specialized programs or schools within the university. Unlike traditional high school graduates, homeschoolers whether they go the GED route or another way, face the challenge of documenting their academic ability in the traditional manner.

A transcript shows course of study, where a GED just shows a competency in a general subject area. Unlike traditional high school graduates, homeschoolers whether they go the GED route or another way, face the challenge of documenting their academic ability in the traditional manner to help in the admission process. And while many colleges may accept GED diploma, without the transcripts (or portfolios or something to document course of study) those students will be at a disadvantage in the admission process.

The military also has a different tier for GED - and last I heard was not accepting GED. There are grants with the GED that will give you a great start if you have really good junior colleges in your area. I know a few people who did this route - even with the cover school transcript option. It still implies that you dropped out of school - blew it somewhere along the line and are now getting your life back on track. This is partially a prejudice as some of the homeschoolers I know who have done this are brilliant people and were just tired of school or saw it as less hassle than the cover school once the child was past mandatory reporting age. These kids did do a lot of high school work - but no one knows or has any means of knowing this.

I'm not sure how municipal jobs look at the GED either and with the job market in our area - well jobs are going to be tough without an actual diploma. We are mostly engineering - and masters and PHds in abundance.

There are plusses and minusses either way. A transcript gives more idea of the depth of the background as courses are listed. It isn't perfect description - ie no one knows that we had our children read works in their entirety (Dante, Homer, Aenid, .... and not just excerpts but they do at least know they did a course on Ancient literature - or took logic or ....

Also one of the big lessons we intend to teach our children is perseverence. Some of my dc would love to be done with me as a teacher and take the GED - they say I'm tougher than a master's degree and I don't let them fake anything. I want them to persevere, learn how to juggle a demanding load (not overly stressful - but many of my children have had to learn some time management skills in terms of staying on track, not neglecting the least favorite thing simply because they'd rather spend the entire year immersed in nothing but WWII. (Can you tell we have some fun loving sanguines in this house - where in the world did they come from with a slave driver mother!    They have to pace themselves. The GED is not going to make them do this. It is a tough test, supposedly, so don't get me wrong - but you have a cram session to pass the GED so it is more of a memorize and pass the test kind of thing. To my kids that would be a fun, easy out.
