Has anyone been involved with generation Joshua?

Jeanne,

My 14yod was going to go this past Fall but a couple of things stopped it.

1. The only way to get her there and back was to meet a bus coming up from Florida "somewhere on I95" -- that seemed a bit spooky to me.

2. They couldn't guarantee that Cate would get to Mass on Sunday. All they would guarantee would be that "there would be private reflection time" on Sunday for every student.

HSLDA is predominantly Protestant, so they don't see that knowingly sending Cate and her not attending Mass would cause me to sin and Cate to sin. When I explained the problem to the guy that was organizing it, he was surprised. All the Catholics he had known growing up wouldn't have "batted an eye". I said,"well this one is, so Cate can't go."

They're very nice and it does sound cool. It just didn't work for Cate this time (maybe next time I can go too and ensure she gets to Mass).

Mary,

Have you everlooked at the classes/information they have on line?

I do know that HSLDA is predominantly Protestant so I am worried about how their telling of history reflects our Catholic faith.

It does seem like a great resouce to learn about the government.

This whole program is very, very popular among homeschoolers here - all the homeschoolers in orchestra have participated and bonded with each other (almost cliquish). They have very ardently tried to recruit our dd. The knowledge of government and the experience of being politically active is very great - but also very Protestant. Everything is from a Biblical/Protestant point of view. My sis let her boys go - but at the time they had a (Protestant)friend that guaranteed to take them to Mass and stay with them there. These people were very good people who were very sensitive to Catholics and made sure non-meat was available on Friday functions etc. It did not hurt her boys Catholicism, but it was still very, very Protestant.

If we were Protestant, we'd have been there. However, we never felt we really could send our dd - one of the reasons including the fact that Mass attendance would be pretty tough and we felt she would be a lone Catholic with no support where our views might deviate from theirs. We also had a gut feeling that it was viewed as a means of conversion. Our dd still considers these girls her friends and they talk together in orchestra - but after it became obvious that we weren't going to this event, she basically has never been invited to anything with them (even a get together to watch a video). It may be different depending on the area and who the individual is who is running it.
