Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I was looking over my dd's philosophy work. As I was going over, I tried to ask some questions. She seemed to remember very little of what she has studied. The whole exchange ended with her in tears and me feeling like a failure.

I think I was being unfair. I was trying to fill a form to enroll her in next semester at the local college for a dual enrollment program. They require a transcript. I have not kept up with her work on a weekly basis. I was trying to get a feel as what grade to give her. Now, I feel i can't give her an A because I feel she doesn't has mastery of the material. But is it fair? she did the work she was supposed to do. She read the material, she did the chapter outlines she was asked to do. She even lead the discussion on one of the chapters at her weekly class. Should she be penalized because she doesn't remember the details? What is the goal for high school? should it be exposure or mastery? should she be able to rattle a bunch of facts on, let's say, Hume or Descartes?

I am expecting too much and loosing sight of the skills she is learning?

Natalia, I had a similar situation around transcript making time...oh we moms . What came down here was this...my dh chose to move forward with the A based on her work at the time and not at mastery proved in this moment. He argued that given some time to revisit the material, she would most likely be able to regain some mastery but for now, her mind was focusing on other material. Plus, he reminded me that schooled high school students, once a class is finished, are never asked to prove their grade.

Hope this helps and I'm praying for you and your dd during this time of transition.

Love,

Umm...I graduated with a degree in philosophy and led an intro level course while in grad school. Personally, at the high school level, I think the exposure is just fine. Even at the intro level in college, exposure is really the goal. Mastery of the various philosophers is something that should be achieved at upper levels. I would think she's deserving of an A if she completed all the work.

Thank you guys!

You reassured me in what I was thinking. Homeschooling high school is hard. That little worm that visits you and breaths fear into you is ever present. Maybe it won't be as hard when my second comes along... maybe?
