Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm looking for a resource that will give exercises (workbook, etc) in usage. For instance "effect-affect" a lot, a while-awhile, emigrant-immigrant, enamored of, etc...lots of practice correcting common mistakes . Any suggestions?

Elizabeth,

Have you ever seen Winston Word Works? I have used Winston Grammar with some of my dc. We love the program but have not used the Word Works book.

I like Susan C. Anthony's Homophones Resource Book. It does mostly cover the actual homophones which I see is only partially what you were asking about. But she does cover many of the common usage errors which sound similar but aren't actually homophones, like affect-effect, were-where, accept-except, access-excess, are-our, sense-since, then-than, to name a few.

Here is a really helpful online resource (no quizes or anything) - Common Erros in English Usage

There are on-line quizes here of Notorious Confusables .

I got the kids the daily calendar version of this, and it's quite a fun way to be reminded of errors.

These look like exactly what I want. I just wish there were exercises to go with them. I guess I could just have him make up sentences to demonstrate correct usage. I'd like to go in reverse as well--find errors in usage...

Elizabeth -- have you tried the (shhhh!)workbooks called Editor in Chief -- my kids used these back in middle school. They have different levels and are kind of un to find the errors. Many of the mistakes are the common ones you've mentioned.

A fun book to read about common punctuation mistakes is Eats, Shoots and Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation -- it's a pretty interesting book, very doable with 12 and ups.

Hope this helps....
